Chevy Takes Four Dependability Awards in J.D. Powers Study

How dependable are Chevy vehicles?

How dependable are Chevy vehicles?

It can be hard to measure the dependability of a new vehicle. Often, when you are shopping for a new car, you will ask family and friends for their vehicle experiences and do a little research as well. If you are looking specifically at the Chevrolet brand and want to know how dependable are Chevy vehicles, you are in lucks. Chevy took four dependability awards in a recent J.D. Powers Study. Keep reading for details.

What Chevy Models Won 2016 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Awards?

The J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study looks a wide selection of three-year-old vehicles, and measures owner satisfaction and dependability in the last several months. Have owners needed to bring the cars into the shop, or been irritated by a slow infotainment system? J.D. Power then ranks each vehicle in it’s segment. This year the Chevy brand as a whole ranked in the top ten, with four vehicles taking the top place in their respective segments.

2013 Chevy Camaro ranked most dependable midsize sporty car 2016
The Chevy Malibu took the J.D. Powers award for the Midsize Car category for the second year in a row. Earlier this year, the 2016 Chevy Malibu was also chosen as one of Kelley Blue Book’s top family car picks, thanks to its low fuel consumption, spacious interior, and top safety ratings.
For the fourth-year-running, the Chevy Camaro dominated in the Midsize Sporty Car category. This means that the 2013 Camaro pictured below will give you minimal problems, while delivering premium power. The new Camaro has also been honored on the Ward’s 10 Best Engines List.
2013 Chevy Equinox topped Compact SUV dependability study
2013 Chevy Silverado HD most dependable heavy duty truck
In the Compact SUV category, the Chevy Equinox took a dependability acknowledgment for the first time. This high-quality and extremely versatile vehicle is ideal for families that want to split the difference between car-handling and SUV capability. And, even better, it’s built in Canada!
The Chevy Silverado HD also took a segment Award in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup category for its second year in a row. The light-duty Silverado also took third place in the rankings for Large Light Duty Pickups, which means that Chevy truck drivers can rely on a dependable truck no matter the capability.

In the 2016 J.D. Powers Dependability Study, the Chevy Tahoe also took second in the Large SUV Category, and the GMC and Buick brands also stood out as impressively reliable.

2016 Chevy Camaro Engine Makes Ward’s 10 Best Engines List

We already knew that the 2016 Chevy Camaro was an excellent, powerful and engaging muscle car, but now there is even more proof that it’s not just a pretty face or an iconic nameplate. This year the all-new 3.6-litre engine in the 2016 Camaro was recognized by WardsAuto magazine as one of the ten best engines of the year for its outstanding power, feel, and fuel-saving technology.

Available on the 2016 Camaro LT, the winning 3.6-litre V6 is rated for a breathless 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque. That is the highest specific output of any of the segment’s naturally aspirated V6. GM leaders are proud of their powertrain and research and development teams, and the engine gained praise for it’s power, but also its pricing and feel.“The 3.6 delivers the kind of power and lusty exhaust note you associate with a V-8 for the price of a V-6. Plus, it’s loaded with advanced technology, including fuel-saving cylinder deactivation,” said Drew Winter, director, Content at WardsAuto, in a recent Chevrolet press release.

The winning 3.6-litre engine also features multiple fuel-saving technologies. The Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system is one which allows the engine to disable two cylinders when optimal power and accleration are not required. Direct injection and continuously variable valve timing also allow the Chevy Camaro with this engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission to get about 10.2 L/100km in city driving and about 8.4 L/100km in city driving.

Flashback Friday: Chevy Camaro Celebrates 50 Years

Today’s Flashback Friday is going to be something of a celebration of both the past and the present. Here at Craig Dunn Motor City, we believe that anniversaries are worth celebrating. The Chevy Camaro celebrates 50 years of muscle car elegance this year, so we are looking at a few of the incarnations that have made this model stand out over half a century.

First Generation

The public, craving speed and style for the drag racing wars of the late 60s, fell in love with the First Generation Camaro (1967-69). One of our favorites cars is the performance-optimized 1967 Chevy Camaro Z28 (pictured).

Second Generation

From 1970 to 1981, the Camaro lost horsepower (because of new automotive emissions restrictions) but it gained a lower center of gravity and wider base, which made its handling a dream. Pictured: The 1979 Chevy Camaro Z28.

Third Generation

The Third Generation (1982-92) offered a refined suspension with enhanced track handling. It also marked the advent of the 1LE track pack and a Motor Trend Car of the Year awardPictured: 1992 Chevy Camaro Z28 Convertible.

Fourth Generation

A redesigned front fascia and performance enhancements make the 1993-2002 Camaro stand out. The 1998 model finally achieved the high engine outputs that had been lost to tightened emissions standards. Pictured: 1998 Chevy Camaro SS.

Fifth Generation

After a seven-year hiatus, the Camaro returned looking closer to the sleek muscle car we know today. This model was a top seller, and also earned the honor of being an Indianapolis 500 Pace carPictured: 2010 Chevy Camaro SS.

Sixth Generation Camaro

Now we come to the modern era of Camaro elegance. With new, award winning engine options, and the latest technology like the all-new 10-speed automatic transmission in the 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1, the newest Camaro generation is already making a powerful and confident statement. We can’t wait to see where this confident vehicle will drive to next. Check out our new Camaro inventory today.

New Enhancements Make Chevy Vehicles Roar

2017 Chevy Performance Parts

With the 2016 SEMA Show, Chevrolet has released a number of performance-enhancing parts that will make the Camaro, Cruze and various Chevy trucks burn even more rubber (in a good way). We’re not sure how many of these 2017 Chevy performance parts will be available here in Manitoba, but we are sure that these or enhancements like them will be available some day. It’s fun to get a preview of them now.

Camaro Performance Enhancement

2016 SEMA Chevy Camaro with specialty performance partsWhile the base 2017 Chevy Camaro can burn up the track or the road, adding new 2017 Chevy performance parts can give this great muscle car even more oomph. SS models with the V6 and 2.0-liter engines can be enhanced with parts ranging from a brake upgrade (which features six-piston front calipers and sturdier rotors), a suspension upgrade (with enhanced handling or lowering) and even a new performance air intake.

Chevy Truck Performance Parts for 2017

Both appearance and practical accessories and enhancement will be available for Chevy trucks (including the Silverado and Colorado) in the new year. One of the newest options is a performance exhaust kit. Available with the 5.3-liter engine and 6.2-liter engine, this kit can deliver an extra 10 horsepower or 7 horsepower (respectively). Other available truck accessories will include custom wheels, side steps, bed liners, tonneau covers, and floor liners.

Cruze and Malibu Performance Parts

For those seeking a little more street-level zip for their Chevy sedan, there are also options, like a suspension lowering kit with stiffer springs, an enhance cornering system, and a new front stabilizer that can drop the 2017 Chevy Cruze Hatch 0.4 inches. The Cruze will also be available with a refined air intake and and exhaust system, while the Malibu will also be available with enhancements. The Cruze and Malibu Blue Line Concept cars at SEMA 2016 debuted some of these premium parts.

Engine options on the 2016 Chevy Camaro

This last weekend the 2016 Chevy Camaro premiered in Canada at the 17th Annual St. Catharines Powertrain Show & Shine. The new Camaro comes with one of three powertrain options, and each engine selection is an example of the high quality workmanship coming out of the St. Catharines Powertrain facility in Ontario. While each of the engine options on the 2016 Chevy Camaro offers enough horsepower to satisfy the soul of any speed-fiend, they have distinctly different advantages, depending on what you are looking for in a muscle car.

Efficient and powerful Ectotec 2.0L turbo

If efficiency is your goal, the Ectotec 2.0L turbo is your best friend, putting out 275 horsepower, 295 pound-feet of torque, and an estimated fuel consumption rating of just 7.8 L/100 km on the highway. This highly effective engine premiered in 2013 on the Chevy Malibu and has been improving ever since.

Three 2016 Camaro trim options

Next evolution of the 3.6L V-6

Right in the middle of the 2016 Camaro’s engine options falls the 3.6L V-6. This engine has the best specific output of any naturally aspirated V-6 with 335 horsepower, and is sure to make the Camaro fly.

LT1 6.2L V-8 powerhouse

Of course, if you are in the mood for pure power, the 2016 Camaro has that in spades with the LT1 6.2L V-8 available on the SS trim. This gorgeous piece of machinery can deliver a whopping 455 horsepower matched with 455 pound-feet of torque. That makes the 2016 Camaro the most powerful SS ever.

The delivery date for the 2016 model is still a few months off, but you can test drive a 2015 Chevy Camaro right away by filling out our convenient online form or contacting us. Flashback Friday: New Chevy Camaro Is the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car

This week for Flashback Friday, we’re not flashing back very far at all. Last weekend was the 100th Anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, and Chevy also had a milestone! Once again a Chevrolet vehicle was the official pace car for this historic race, and this year it was none other than the 2017 Camaro SS 50th Anniversary Edition. Keep reading for more about this car and the history of the Indy pace car and the Chevy Camaro.

Read More: Where Did the Camaro Get Its Name?

2017 Chevy Camaro Pace Car for the 2016 Indy 500

That 2017 Chevy Camaro was the ninth Chevy Camaro to be the pace car for the Indy 500 and the 27th Chevrolet vehicle to have that honor since 1948. We don’t know a lot about the 50th Anniversary Edition of the new Camaro (which is scheduled to be released later this year), but we know that the 2017 Chevy Camaro pace car for the 2016 Indy 500 featured an Abalone White exterior with the Indianapolis wing-and-wheel logo on the side and “100th Running of the Indianapolis 500” on the doors.

Pictured: Each of the Chevy Camaro Pace Cars.

What is a pace car at the Indianapolis 500?

Much as we love the look and the aerodynamic style of the Chevy Camaro, it doesn’t look like a traditional Indy car, and it’s not supposed to. The pace car has two roles: it leads the competing vehicles around the track for the Indy’s rolling start and, in the case of a caution period, the pace car will go out again to lead the vehicles in a slower route around the track.

This second job happens commonly if there is an accident and vehicles have to reduce speed to avoid crashing. Traditionally, the winner of the Indianapolis 500 (this year Alexander Rossi) will be given one of the year’s pace cars.

Our main blog image is the 2017 Camaro SS beside the 1967 Camaro RS/SS, which was the first Chevy pace car at the Indy 500. Below are the 1969 Camaro RS/SS (left), an illustration of the 1982 Camaro Z28 (center) and the 1993 Camaro Z28 Pace Car (right).

New 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 10-speed Transmission

The 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 coming out later this year will be the first to feature the all-new available Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission. This new transmission option promises to offer the 2017 Camaro a driving and accelerating edge that other muscle-cars will struggle to meet. Hydra-Matic 10-Speed Transmission Advantages

2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 new 10-speed transmissionWhile an eight-speed automatic Hydra-Matic transmission was previously available on the 2016 Chevy Camaro (mated to the award-winning 3.6-litre V6 engine), the 2017 Camaro ZL1 will be the first volume production car to offer the 10-speed option. It will unite with a supercharged 6.2-litre LT4 engine to deliver an estimated blistering 640 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque.
This new automatic transmission offers extremely smooth, streamlined transitions and a wider gear ratio spread compared to previous transmissions. “There is simply nothing like the experience offered with the new 10-speed automatic in the Camaro ZL1,” said Aaron Link, ZL1 lead development engineer, in a recent Chevrolet press release. “It delivers nearly instantaneous, lightning-fast shifts that alter your perception of what an automatic transmission can offer in a high-performance vehicle – whether you’re on the street, drag strip or road course.”

2016 Chevy Camaro Features

2016 Chevy Camaro Driving Experience

Each year popular vehicles get updated and improved. It is exciting to discover what changes are coming with new models. One updated model is the 2016 Chevy Camaro. It will now have an available drive mode selector that will improve the overall 2016 Chevy Camaro driving experience. Let’s take a look at how this new feature works.

Chevrolet engines worked hard to develop new technologies that enable drivers to control their Camaro’s performance according to the driving conditions. The new 2016 Camaro has a drive mode selector that helps the vehicle adapt to various situations. These modes include snow/ice, tour, sport, and track. The various adjustments help calibrate throttle progression, steering, stability control and more. These settings with help the 2016 Chevy Camaro to operate to its full potential no matter what the weather or road conditions are. Chevy knows that not all driving situations are the same, so why should your vehicle be expected to handle them with only one driving mode?

The 2016 Camaro will also have an enhanced dual-mode exhaust system. This includes new electronically controlled valves that bypass the mufflers under acceleration for improved performance and greater sound levels. It is also customizable with the option of either “stealth” mode or a more aggressive “track” mode. Chevy is planning to introduce the all-new 2016 Camaro on May 16 during a public event.

If you are interested in learning more about the new Camaro, Craig Dunn Motor City invites you to check back here often. We will let you know everything there is to know about this new model and we will even tell you when the Chevy Camaro arrives right here at our dealership in Winnipeg! Flashback Friday: 1967 Chevy Camaro Z28

It’s been a while since we had a Flashback Friday, but we found these photos of the 1967 Camaro Z28, and thought we would throw them up with a little history of this race-track optimized package of the very first generation Camaro.

Z/28 Package on the 1967 Chevy Camaro

The first generation of the Chevy Camaro released for the 1967 model year was available with multiple factory and trim options, and three main packages. The RS package was mainly appearance based, and the SS offered a 5.7-liter V8 engine and specialty exterior touches, but the Z28 was on another level completely.

Designed to perfectly integrate into the Trans-Am road-racing series, the 1967 Chevy Camaro Z28 package included a specialized chassis and suspension system and a unique 4.9-liter V8 engine that came in just under the maximum engine displacement limits for the Trans-Am races. Matched to a Muncie four-speed manual transmission, that engine was rated for 290 horsepower (just slightly over the lowest available horsepower on the current 2016 Chevy Camaro), though that may have been a deliberate under-estimation by Chevrolet. The actual maximum horsepower for the 1987 Camaro Z28 was probably between 360 and 400 horses. This specialty package option also include front disc brakes, unique tires, and racing stripes. It had sport-car handling and breathless performance.

Only 600 1967 Camaro Z28 Models Produced

While production numbers for the RS and SS packages respectively were around 64,800 and 34,400 models for the 1967 model year, only about 600 models of the 1967 Chevy Camaro Z28 were produced. That means while collectors can generally find a used first-generation Camaro for less-than the MSRP for a new model, the rare and valuable Z28 is much pricier and hard to find. Definitely fun to spend a Flashback Friday checking out this sleek and powerful powerhouse!

Flashback Friday: What is a Camaro?

What is the origin of the Camaro name?

The Chevy Camaro, from its very first incarnation in 1966 to the soon-to-arrive and better than ever 2016 model, has been the ideal pony car – a stylish and compact coupe (or convertible) with an eye to sporty performance in an affordable package. But what is the origin of the Camaro name?

People don’t know exactly where the Camaro name came from. When the plans to create the Chevy Camaro as an opponent to the Ford Mustang were first announced at a General Motors press conference, GM leaders said that the name started with a “C” to fall in line with other sporty Chevy vehicles at that time like the versatile Corvair and the Corvette sports car.

When asked what the name meant, Chevrolet representatives told reporters at the press conference that a Camaro was a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.

Pictured: Various  1967 and 1969 model year Chevy Camaros.

Later explanations for the name included a French meaning related to companionship, friendship and reliability, all virtues that the Camaro was intended to convey. While no such word like “camaro” exists in any French dictionary we could find, the Camaro certainly has stood by those ideals through six generations of automotive excellence.

While the horsepower output of the Chevy Camaro took a sharp dip (along with most of the rest of the automotive world) when more stringent fuel economy and emissions standards were implemented in the ’70s, performance on this great vehicle has been steadily climbing since. Today, car enthusiasts everywhere are able to get the speed and endurance that they are looking for in the iconic, well-equipped, and extremely fun to drive Camaro pony car.

Want to be a part of the movement? Schedule your test drive today and see what kind of speed and automotive excellent are available with the modern Camaro.

2017 Chevrolet Camaro Performance

What are the engine options on the 2017 Chevy Camaro?

The Chevrolet Camaro is essentially synonymous with performance. This powerful muscle car cuts an iconic profile, while still embracing modern sensibilities. The Camaro has been used for racing since its earliest generations. It has been the Indianapolis 500 pace car 8 times since 1967 and is often used by drag racers. While you may not want to race your 2017 Chevrolet Camaro, it is important to know how your new vehicle will perform.

The 2017 Chevy Camaro offers three different engine options. The standard 2.0L 4-Cylinder turbo engine provides plenty of power, with 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Of your other options, the most powerful is the 6.2L V8 engine. You’ll have a lot of power on your hands with 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. Last but not least is the 3.6L V6 engine. This engine is no slouch with 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque.

2017 Chevrolet Camaro options

Power isn’t the only thing that the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro has going for it. The three powerful engines are coupled with your choice of manual or automatic transmission. On the 3.6L V6, the 8-speed automatic has the fuel-saving Active Fuel Technology that provides a fuel consumptions rating of 8.0L/100 km on the highway. The 6.2L V8 with the automatic transmission also has Active Fuel Management technology, as well as Direct Injection and Variable Valve Timing, and an impressive 8.7L/100 km highway fuel consumption rating.

The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro is also a fast car. No matter if you choose automatic or manual, you’ll be breezing past with 0 to 96 km/h speeds of 5.4 manual and 5.5 automatic on the 2.0L engine, 5.2 seconds manual and 5.1 seconds automatic on the 3.6 V6, and a freakishly fast 4.3 seconds manual and 4 seconds flat automatic from the 6.2L V8.  Learn more about the other features of the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro at Craig Dunn Motor City, and schedule a test drive.

Teen Driver Feature on Chevy Vehicles Helps Reduced Parent Worries

As Labour Day, a return to school, and the end of summer get closer, more and more teens are getting their learner stage licences. Fortunately for parents who may be worrying about their students on the road by themselves for the first time, the Teen Driver feature on Chevy vehicles can help parents instill good driving habits in their students. Keep reading to learn more about what Chevy vehicles have Teen Driver and what this feature offers.

What Chevy Vehicles Have Teen Driver?

The Teen Driver feature has previously been available on several Chevy vehicles, like the 2016 Chevy Malibu. However, for 2017 this safe-driving advantage will be available on ten models in North America: the 2017 Chevy Camaro, Chevy Silverado and Silverado HD, Chevy Suburban, Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Colorado, Chevy Cruze, Chevy Volt, Chevy Malibu, and Chevy Bolt EV. We’re not sure yet if all these models will be available with this feature in Canada, but we are hoping that they will!

Teen Driver Feature on Chevy Vehicles

But what is involved in the Teen Driver feature? Parents interested in using this features with their learning driver must first register their teen’s keyfob with their Chevy’s system settings. After that, whenever that keyfob is in use certain safety practices will be in place. Some of these include:

  • Muting the vehicle sound system if seatbelts are not being used
  • Visual and audible warnings when the car goes over pre-set speeds
  • Limits on maximum sound system volume
  • Limits on maximum speed
  • Automatic activation of advanced safety features

Teen Driver Report Card

The available in-vehicle Teen Driver Report Card can also set parents minds at ease (or give them practical information to help their student learn better driving habits). This report card gives a summary of student driving. The exact items available on the Report Card will vary by vehicle, but some options include maximum speed reached, the total distance driven, and if any features like stability control, anti-lock brakes, traction control or Forward Collision Alerts and Braking were needed.

Unlike features like 4G LTE Wi-Fi on Chevy vehicles or OnStar services, Teen Driver does not need to be renewed or purchased on a monthly level. Contact a member of our Craig Dunn Motor City sales team today to learn what vehicles available here in Portage La Prairie offer this feature.

What is Magnetic Ride Control?

Every year, automakers work to develop new technology to offer an even better driving experience to all their customers. Magnetic Ride Control is one such enhancement. But what is Magnetic Ride Control? Available on the advanced trims of GM vehicles like the GMC Sierra 1500, Magnetic Ride Control adjusts the shocks of the vehicle real-time in response to changes in the terrain to offer a luxury smooth ride even when on rough roads or trailering.

This dampening system was first offered on the 2015 Sierra Denali as a standard feature for both the 5.3-litre or the 6.2-litre V8 engine options. Combined with other chassis and suspension alterations, this system made the Sierra an even better option for a full-size truck.

Read More: Features and Powertrain of the 2016 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate

How Does Magnetic Ride Control Work?

Magnetic Ride Control pairs electronically controlled shock absorbers and sensors that read road conditions every fraction of a second, for a ride that can be tailored to driving conditions approximately every five milliseconds.

The electronic shock absorbers which replace traditional mechanical-valve shocks are filled with a magneto-rheological fluid which can behave like a regular liquid some of the time, but become stiffer when exposed to a magnetic field. The fluid contains tiny iron particles that will line up in that field. These shock absorbers can be carefully calibrated to offer precise levels of dampening.

This technology is also being used in things like washing machines, and may lead to advanced reactive body armor in the future. Check out the video below to see magneto-rheological fluid in action!

In addition to the GMC Sierra Denali, Magnetic Ride Control is available on several other premium GM vehicles like the ZL1 and SS trims of the Chevy Camaro. Contact Craig Dunn today to schedule your test drive and feel the difference for yourself.

Why do cars even need grilles?

Vehicles these days all have different grill sizes, from the lean lines of the Chevy Camaro to the wide intake lines of the GMC Sierra, and the shape of the grille can define the style of the car, from stylish, to aggressive, to downright weird. But looking at the array of different shapes and sizes of grilles even on the Chevy, GMC, and Buick vehicles on the lot at Craig Dunn begs the question “Why do cars even need grilles?” We investigated, so keep reading for the best answer we could find.

New GM Inventory

What do car grilles do?

While the look of a grille is certainly vitally important for customer satisfaction, each grille also plays a very important role in cooling the vehicle’s engine, specifically the radiator. Without some way for air to flow into the engine compartment, a car would pose a major risk of overheating. While many modern cars could get enough air cooling through vents underneath the vehicle (and so could skip the front grille) it’s more effective and cool to have a grille in the front.

So while the grille is important, that leave a lot of leeway for how it actually looks. Just by looking at grille designs through the ages (and a handful of modern options) it’s easy to see that the grille can define the style of the car.

New grille technology can improve performance

While grilles come in all shapes and sizes, some technology using them can even improve performance. Many modern cars like the 2016 Chevy Volt and the 2016 GMC Canyon have aerodynamic technology that will close some of the grille grating when the vehicle is moving at top speeds. This reduces drag and improved aerodynamic flow. Other vehicles like the elite performance trims of the Chevy Camaro have specializes airflow paths built into the hood so that air can easily move through the engine and out in such a way that the Camaro can maintain its tight hold on the track and efficiently cool the radiator.

Basically, cars do still need grilles, and every year they are getting cooler than ever.
