What causes a car to overheat?

Seeing steam emerging from under the hood of your vehicle is a driver’s worst nightmare, and unfortunately, overheated engines are pretty common in the hot months. There are many conditions that can cause a car to overheat, but we’re giving out our best tips and tricks for preventing that from happening! Read on for details.

How to prevent your car from overheating

Check for leaks

Although a leak in the cooling system doesn’t directly lead to an overheated engine, the two are closely related. When the cooling system leaks, coolant levels drop, allowing air to enter in and circulate throughout the system. When the air rises to the top of the cooling system, an airlock occurs, which basically means that big bubble is stuck in the cooling system. In turn, the coolant remaining inside the engine becomes heated, causing the engine to eventually overheat.

Change oil on time

Changing your engine oil on time is actually pretty important if you want to keep your car from overheating. Although it isn’t commonly known, engine oil is a vital component to keeping the engine cool. Oil lubricates the engine parts to prevent the parts from rubbing together and causing friction, and if the oil is old, it won’t properly do its job. Parts causing friction creates heat inside the engine, which can and probably will lead to overheating.

Make sure coolant is concentrated

If you’re buying coolant from the store, you’re going to want to make sure you read the instructions before dumping it into your vehicle. While some coolants come pre-mixed, a huge variety of coolants available at the store aren’t concentrated. If the coolant isn’t ready-to-use straight out of the bottle, make sure you follow the instructions to get the correct concentration.

Do you save or burn more fuel using cruise control?

We love saving money. Who doesn’t? So we’re always looking for different ways to save money, especially on fuel. Experts are now saying that using cruise control may affect your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, but do you save more fuel or use more fuel when you use cruise control? Read on to find out!

Tips for saving money on gas

When you are driving on the highway without cruise control, you probably aren’t maintaining a constant speed. We would be impressed if you were, however! You’re more than likely slowing down, speeding up, and slowing down again. Or maybe you’re driving along, minding your own business, and you look down only to realize you are going way too fast. Both of these issues are big fuel-wasters, and both of these issues can be combatted by using cruise control. Cruise control actually does help you save fuel because it keeps you moving at a very steady speed rather than constantly slowing down and speeding up. It also helps fight wind resistance, which tends to negatively affect gas mileage in a big way. Wind resistance increases by speed, so when you zone out and realize you are way above the speed limit, the wind is taking a big toll on your fuel efficiency.

3 driving tips for staying safe throughout the Canadian winter

Although we were hoping for a quick winter this year, that famous little groundhog saw his shadow earlier this month. So we are preparing ourselves for a few extra weeks of the coldest season. Our team at Craig Dunn Motor City has learned some valuable tips and tricks throughout our time in the automotive industry, so we’re passing along our best secrets for staying safe on the road throughout the tough Canadian winters.

Canadian winter driving tips

Invest in snow tires

It’s no secret that Canada gets piles and piles of snow during the winter, so it’s important to make sure your vehicle is properly equipped to handle the slippery elements. Snow tires are designed to have a better grip on slippery surfaces, which could make the difference between sliding into a ditch and staying safely on the road.

Keep a roadside emergency kit in your trunk

It’s important to have a roadside emergency kit in your vehicle at all times, but its importance is increased tenfold in the winter. Items that should be kept in your kit include jumper cables, flares or triangle reflectors, a phone charger, a first aid kit, a flashlight and batteries, blankets, and a tool kit with common tools.

Drive cautiously

This tip may seem obvious, but it’s often not taken seriously. When conditions are less than ideal, you’ll want to drive slower and more carefully than normal. Slowing down will help drivers avoid sliding off the road or hitting black ice. And when possible, stay home. Better safe than sorry!

How does GMC’s Lane Departure Warning System work?

GMC Lane Departure Warning System

Automakers are constantly working to make sure their vehicles are as safe as possible, and as technology gets more and more advanced, safety features can be a little tricky to understand. GMC’s Lane Departure Alert is now available on a wide variety of vehicles in the manufacturer’s lineup, so we’re breaking down how exactly this advanced safety system works. Read on for details!

GMC Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning

GMC’s Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning uses a camera sensor located on the windshield to detect lane markings on the road. The system operates while the vehicle is travelling between 37 mph and 112 mph, and it’s designed to help drivers avoid collisions while on the road. If the Lane Departure Warning System determines that the vehicle is unintentionally deviating from its lane, the driver will be warned with audio, visual and sensory cues. If the driver takes no corrective measures to stay within the lane lines, the Lane Keep Assist system may kick in and provide steering assistance to keep the vehicle in its lane.

So does this mean that every time you try to change lanes while driving, the system is going to alert you that you’re leaving your lane? Definitely not. The system recognizes that a lane change is intentional when a blinker is used.

What happens if you don’t change your car’s oil on time?

Why you should follow your oil change schedule

If you happen to forget to change the oil in your vehicle for a little longer than suggested, it’s not the end of the world but it can be pretty detrimental to your car’s engine. Many car owners don’t realize just how vitally important regularly changing the vehicle’s engine oil is, and our team here at Craig Dunn Motor City wants to make sure your car stays happy and healthy for years down the road. Wondering what happens if you don’t change your car’s oil on time? Read on to find out!

Why you should change your oil on time

Many car owners realize that oil is an vital factor to keeping their engine running properly, but many are unaware of just how important it is to change the engine oil on time. The oil acts as a lubricant to keep all of the engine parts moving together the way they are supposed to, so if the engine oil is old the parts may rub together and cause friction. This is bad for a few reasons. When the engine parts rub together, the metal-on-metal creates heat, which can cause the parts themselves to weld together. When this happens, the engine seizes, leading to very expensive repairs. Another thing that can happen when you don’t change your engine oil on time is that dirt will accumulate in the oil, which can clog the filter. When the filter is clogged, the engine will quickly wear out, again leading to expensive repairs. So simply put, make sure you change your oil on time unless you want to spend a bunch of money fixing or replacing your engine!

What can I tow with the 2017 Chevy Colorado?

If you own weekend toys such as a boat, camper, dirt bike or off-road vehicle, you’re going to need to tow or haul the cargo at some point. One of the most important things to keep in mind when shopping for a new vehicle that will be used for towing is the vehicle’s towing capacity. We already know that the 2017 Chevy Colorado has a best-in-class towing capacity among mid-size pickups, but what exactly can you haul with the 2017 Colorado?

As you can see from the chart above, the maximum towing capacity of the 2017 Chevy Colorado is 7,700 pounds when combined with the available Tow/Haul Mode. But what does that mean exactly? When determining what you can tow with your 2017 Colorado, you’ll want to take a variety of factors into account. You should factor in weight of passengers, trailer weight and cargo weight before determining what your 2017 Colorado can tow. How inflated should my 2017 GMC Sierra’s tires be?

To find your vehicle’s recommended tire pressures, you’re going to want to check out the Tire Information Label, which is located on the inside of your Sierra 1500’s driver’s-side doorframe. If you can’t find the label or are looking for the information on-the-go, we’ve got you covered. Depending on the type of tires your 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 came equipped with, you are either going to want to have your tires filled to 35 psi or 45 psi. Again, for more specific information to your vehicle and tires, check out the Tire Information Label on your 2017 Sierra 1500.

Although the 2017 GMC Sierra comes standard with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System, it’s a good practice to manually check your tire inflation once a month. Driving with underinflated or overinflated tires can cause a blowout, reduced fuel economy, a rough ride, or danger to others on the road, so investing in a quality pocket gauge to manually check your tire pressure is always recommended by our team at Craig Dunn Motor City.

Why is my oil light still on after an oil change?

You never want to ignore an illuminated dashboard warning light, especially if it stays on after you have already taken action to fix the problem. There are a variety of reasons your oil light may stay illuminated even after an oil change, and it’s important to be aware of possible causes. Read on for details!

You might also be interested in: How to reset the TPMS light in your Chevy

Causes of a flickering oil light

If your oil light stays on even after changing your engine oil, you’re going to want to check the sensor first to rule out a malfunctioning sensor as the cause. Dirt and other particles can make their way into the oil pump, causing the sensor to falsely identify oil issues. Replacing the sensor is fairly simple, but if you don’t feel comfortable replacing the part yourself, bring your vehicle into a certified technician. The next common cause is low oil pressure. If the oil pressure is below 5 pounds per square inch, your oil light will illuminate. Although this shouldn’t happen after receiving an oil change, you’re still going to want to check the oil level just to be sure.

The final common cause of an illuminated oil light, even after an oil change, is probably the most problematic. The oil pump may not be circulating enough oil to keep the engine’s parts lubricated and functioning properly, which can in turn cause multiple engine issues. Although receiving oil changes at regular intervals should prevent this problem from occurring, parts do wear over time.

What is the difference in cabin size for trucks?

Crew Cab vs Double Cab

We know that some folks who are searching for a new truck have some questions about the vocabulary used to describe features within truck models. We are here to help and a common question we hear about is the difference between a Crew Cab and a Double Cab. We will compare the Crew Cab vs Double Cab so shoppers can better understand what type of vehicle they want.

READ MORE: 2018 Chevy Silverado LT vs 2018 Chevy Silverado LTZ

Differences

The primary difference between a Crew Cab and a Double Cab is the size. The Double Cab, also known as an Extended Cab, is actually smaller than the Crew Cab. The Double Cab is tighter and the Crew Cab gives ample room for passengers or extra luggage and gear you need to bring along. Now that you know the difference between the two, we’ll tell you what each size is recommended for your needs.

Recommendations

When it comes to choosing a new vehicle, choosing the right cabin size can mean a lot. If you do not need to fit that many people into your vehicle, the Double Cab is a nice choice. If you need more space for passengers or cargo, the Crew Cab is the better choice. There are also other factors to take in that do not have to do with cabin size that also matter when purchasing a new vehicle, but this is a good start.
