The Prairie Dog Central Railway 

Date: Monday September 2 

Time: 11 AM to 2:45 PM 

The Prairie Dog Central Railway is a great way to spend time with the kids. They will have a nice, relaxing train ride to the rural community of Grosse Isle. There they have some historical sites as well as freshly prepared food and live music to enjoy. Oak Hammock Marsh 

Date: Saturday August 31 to Monday September 2 

Time: 10 AM to 4:30 PM 

The Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre is having a Labour Day Weekend event to give you and your family a great experience while traversing the beautiful nature of Manitoba. There will be guided marsh walks as well as guided canoe excursions. You can also rent your own canoes for a trip around the marsh. The kids will love the games and crafts and face painting as well. Celebrate Halloween 2016 in Portage La Prairie!

October is a time of changing leaves, but it’s also a great time to get out of the house and do a little trick-or-treating in the community. While many of last year’s Winnipeg Halloween trick-or-treat events will be happening again, this year we wanted to look a little close to home at some great Halloween events 2016 in Portage La Prairie MB.

Halloween Skate Spooktacular – PCU Centre – Portage Mutual Arena

Held from 2-4 p.m. at the PCU Centre on October 30, 2016, this free skate presented by the PRRA will feature candy and fun for all ages! The Halloween Skate Spooktacular is free, but participants should bring skates, helmets, and wear a skate-friendly costume.

Ghost Walk – Fort La Reine Museum

Enjoy a terrifying night of Halloween fun on Saturday, October 22 at the Fort La Reine Museum Ghost Walk. Come from 6-10 p.m. dressed up and be able to tour the Museum Village, experience the new Haunted Mansion, visit the Magical Tent and creep through the Living Dead Forbidden Forest. This event will also include crafts, free hot chocolate, and more family fun! Rain date is October 29.

Halloween Party – Family Resource Centre

On Monday October 31, 2016 families and pre-school children can enjoy games and snacks at the Family Resource Centre Halloween Party. This event will run from 1-3 p.m. Call 204-239-3986 to register.

HPC Halloween Birthday Party & Dance – Herman Prior Centre

On October 28, anyone in the community is welcome to the HBC Halloween Birthday Party and Dance! This event is free, with two spot dances and a prize for best costume. Cake and ice cream will be available for $2, or free if your birthday falls in October!

Spring has finally sprung in the Winnipeg area and we couldn’t be more excited. This improved weather is here just in time to help celebrate Earth Day on April 22. There are many ways to celebrate this spring day. Here are a few suggestions for Earth Day activities in Winnipeg MB.

The first way you can celebrate Earth Day, is by visiting the Children’s Museum in Winnipeg. The Children’s Museum is hosting a variety of events that children can enjoy while also learning about Earth Day. The activities will take place on Wednesday, April 22 from 11 am – 3 pm. Participation is free with museum admission. There will be discounted school programs and eco-friendly activities. The museum even has a Pop m’Art gallery where you can donate recyclable materials to be made into art. The Pop m’Art gallery is a place where kids can come to create works of art from the materials available.

Another way to celebrate Earth Day is to simply enjoy the day outside. There are many parks right in the Winnipeg area to explore and enjoy. There are even off leash dog areas, disc golf, athletic fields and more. This is the perfect day to take a walk or hike with your friends or family. Happy Canada Day!

Canada Day Events near Winnipeg

Now that summer is finally here, Canada Day is quickly approaching. It’s time to start planning what you’ll be doing to celebrate. There are many options available depending on where you live and how far you are willing to travel. Today we’re going to look at some Canada Day events near Winnipeg for you to enjoy.

Canada Day at the Forks

One exciting option is Canada Day at the Forks. This event will be taking place at the Forks on Wednesday, July 1st. The Forks is located in the heart of downtown at the junction of Assiniboine and mighty Red rivers. There will be events all day long, including concerts at three different stages, an obstacle course, large board games, a photo booth and more! The event will end at 11:00 p.m. with a fireworks display.

Canada Day a PCU Centre

The PCU Centre is also hosting Canada Day events in Portage la Prairie. There will be entertainment all day long. These events include a pancake breakfast, children’s activities, dragon boat races, live entertainment, evening fireworks and more! This event will be taking place Wednesday, July 1st on Island Park.

Canada Day at Osborne Village

On Tuesday June 30th and Wednesday July 1st, Osborne Village will be celebrating Canada Day by helping to create the largest street festival in Winnipeg. It will be full of family fun, food, entertainment and more! The Osborne Village Street Festival will have over twelve extended patios, six live stages, pony ride, petting zoo, inflatable bouncers, obstacles courses, outdoor arcade, over forty vendors and shopping at all the Osborne Village businesses. This is a great way to spend the day celebrating Canada Day.

Canadian Thanksgiving is right around the corner (coming up on Monday, October 10), so it might be a good time to start making plans. Whether you always go to one house on Thanksgiving, or you have to find something new to do this year, it’s good to be prepared. If you’ve been wondering what’s open for Thanksgiving 2016 in Portage La Prairie MB as far as shopping and other opportunities, here are a few of the things that we’ve been able to find out.

Grocery Stores in Portage La Prairie MB

A Thanksgiving meal with turkey and stuffingSometimes you get all the way to Thanksgiving and then realize that you need that one item to put the finishing touches on your Thanksgiving feast. We don’t have solid opening and closing times for all of these locations in Portage La Prairie MB, but we are estimating based on Sunday and holiday hours.

  • Walmart – One of the few times that we are sure of, Walmart will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, October 10, 2016.
  • Sobeys – Usually open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m on Mondays, Sobeys in Portage La Prairie MB may be open from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving because those are Sunday hours.
  • Portage Supermarket Ltd – Usually open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays, the Portage Supermarket may offer Sunday hours: 11 a.m to 6:30 p.m.
  • Portage La Prairie Co-Op – For Labour Day, the Portage La Praire Co-Op River Road, Marketplace and Austin Gas Bars were open 7 a.m to 10 p.m. The Marketplace Food Store and MacGregor Farm and Building were closed. We don’t know yet, but we’re hoping the Co-Op has similar hours for Thanksgiving.
  • Liquor Mart – Another location where we have official Thanksgiving 2016 opening times, the Liquor Mart will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Shopping and Gifts on Thanksgiving in Portage La Prairie

  • Schapansky’s Florists – Not only will Schapansky’s Florists be open, but they may be open to delivery for that special someone or to create a great Thanksgiving centerpiece.
  • Portage La Prairie Mall – The Mall usually open Monday to Friday 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Not sure yet if they will be closed or using Sunday hours (noon to 5 p.m.)

When: All Day 

This year’s Potato Festival is going to be a blast. There will be free kids’ activities and fries on Saturday the 11th and plenty of music. There will be two great bands playing and some beer gardens available for your enjoyment. This is a fun, family-friendly event that will make for an unforgettable experience. Other Activities

There are other events asides from the main festivities as well. There is the Portage Potato Fest Baby Spud Contest where you can enter your little one to win or watch the competition with your family. There will also be a Portage has Talent contest for family-friendly entertainment. To register for either of these events, you must do so by July 27th. Toronto 2015 Pan Am Countdown

With Chevy being one of the main sponsors of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am games, Craig Dunn Motor City is already getting excited for this summer. The Pan American Games are the world’s third largest international multi-sports Games. The first Pan American games were held in 1951 in Argentina. This year, Toronto will be hosting a dozen countries for the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. Join Craig Dunn Motor City in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am countdown.

There will be almost 7,000 athletes from across Latin America, South America, the Caribbean and North America. The only events bigger than Pan American is the Olympics and Paralympic Summer Games. The Pan American Games will involved a variety of municipalities stretching from Oshawa to Welland. There are over 20,000 volunteers that will help this become the best Pan Am/ Parapan Am games ever. The Pan Am Games will take place from July 10 – July 26 and the Parapan Am Games from August 7 to August 15.

FIFA Women’s World Cup in Winnipeg

This year Canada is hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which means many football fans will be flocking to these matches. Some games are even taking place here in Winnipeg. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights has 11 powerful, interactive and exciting exhibits. You can even climb to the top, the Tower of Hope, to see a view of the city below. Assiniboine Park Zoo

If you want something the whole family will enjoy, stop by the Journey to Churchill exhibit at Assiniboine Park Zoo. This exhibit features polar bears as they swim, dive and play. Silver Heights St. Patrick’s Day Show
