The 7 Degrees of Winter Tires

In Manitoba, Winter months are full of snow, slippery conditions and cold temperatures. Changing to Winter Tires can help keep you safe and save you money. Once the temperature dips below 7 degrees Celcius, it's time to switch to cold weather tires.

What are the benefits of driving with cold weather tires?

Winter tires feature deeper tread grooves than summer tires, making it easier to grip the road on ice and slippery snow surfaces. When the temperature drops below that 7 degrees, summer tires begin to lose their ability to grip and begin to harden. Winter tires are made of softer rubber and more flexible. They reduce hydroplaning on wet surfaces and assist in making steering and braking easier in winter conditions. Winter tires are safer on Manitoba roads in the winter.

Affordable Options

Craig Dunn Motor City has a wide variety of winter tire options. We are trained to assist you in finding the right tire for your vehicle, in a variety of price ranges. Craig Dunn Motor City is also happy to take part in the Winter Tire Program, a low interest financing option to purchase new winter tires for qualifying Manitoba residents.

Not All Tires are Equal

Take a look at the different types of tires below.

Visit Craig Dunn Motor City at 2345 Sissons Drive in Portage la Prairie for all your tire needs. Or use our Online Tire Store to find the tires that are right for you. If you already have winter tires - you can book your appointment online to change them!

How to stay safe on a road trip

Couple in car at sunset

Fall is in full effect, and that means winter isn’t far away (we’re sorry to be the bearers of bad news). Just because winter is near doesn’t mean you can’t plan a road trip! We thought that now would be a good time to get a refresher on a few safety tips to ensure that your road trip is as enjoyable as possible. Read on to see how your fall or winter trip can be safe and fun at the same time.

Road trip safety tips

There’s never a bad time to go over a few driving safety tips. When you’re on a road trip, it’s probably safe to assume that you aren’t the only one in the car. So, you are responsible for the safety of yourself, others in the car, and others on the road. Here are three simple tips to make sure your road trip journey safely leads you to your destination.

1.) Keep your phone away from you

Of course, if it’s not your turn to drive, having your phone out for entertainment isn’t a problem. If you’re behind the wheel though, stow your phone or give it to a passenger. We know that phones are often used for navigation and music, so if the driver’s phone is responsible for either of those, just give it to someone else and let them manage it. Even if you’re not texting and driving, fidgeting with the GPS or music on your phone is still unsafe while driving.

You might also like: Four tips for preparing your vehicle for a long road trip

2.) Drive in shifts

If your road trip is expected to take, six, seven, eight, even nine or more hours, it’s a good idea to make a driving schedule. For example, if you have a ten-hour trek and five people are in the vehicle, just drive in two-hour shifts. Driving can wear you out more than you might think, so don’t tire yourself! Take a load off and relax in the shotgun seat for a while.

3.) Don’t over fill your car

Driving with friends and family is great, but if you only have room for four passengers, don’t carry more than four passengers. While carpooling is fantastic, it’s okay to travel in a pair or trio of cars if it means each car won’t be too cramped. Too many people in one car can cause too many distractions like noise, conversation, and clutter.

Be safe out on the roads! Especially with winter weather approaching, keep your eyes on the road and have fun!

What causes a car to overheat?

Seeing steam emerging from under the hood of your vehicle is a driver’s worst nightmare, and unfortunately, overheated engines are pretty common in the hot months. There are many conditions that can cause a car to overheat, but we’re giving out our best tips and tricks for preventing that from happening! Read on for details.

How to prevent your car from overheating

Check for leaks

Although a leak in the cooling system doesn’t directly lead to an overheated engine, the two are closely related. When the cooling system leaks, coolant levels drop, allowing air to enter in and circulate throughout the system. When the air rises to the top of the cooling system, an airlock occurs, which basically means that big bubble is stuck in the cooling system. In turn, the coolant remaining inside the engine becomes heated, causing the engine to eventually overheat.

Change oil on time

Changing your engine oil on time is actually pretty important if you want to keep your car from overheating. Although it isn’t commonly known, engine oil is a vital component to keeping the engine cool. Oil lubricates the engine parts to prevent the parts from rubbing together and causing friction, and if the oil is old, it won’t properly do its job. Parts causing friction creates heat inside the engine, which can and probably will lead to overheating.

Make sure coolant is concentrated

If you’re buying coolant from the store, you’re going to want to make sure you read the instructions before dumping it into your vehicle. While some coolants come pre-mixed, a huge variety of coolants available at the store aren’t concentrated. If the coolant isn’t ready-to-use straight out of the bottle, make sure you follow the instructions to get the correct concentration.

Three common signs of a bad transmission

Signs of a bad transmission

Transmission troubles are fairly common unfortunately, but the good news is there are a variety of ways to catch the problem before it turns into an expensive repair. Interested in learning more? Keep reading and we’ll fill you in on all the important details!

You might also be interested in: What to do if you hit a pothole in Portage la Prairie

Signs of transmission trouble

1. Stalled or delayed gear shifts

One of the best ways to tell your transmission is going out is a delayed or stalled gear shift. This sign is pretty hard to miss since you’ll most likely feel a jerk in the car as you accelerate. If you drive a manual, you may also find that it’s physically difficult to get the gears to shift when your transmission is failing.

2. Transmission fluid leak

The transmission is designed to completely enclose the transmission fluid, so if you notice a bright red fluid under your vehicle, you’re going to want to have the transmission checked out by a professional. The easiest way to tell if it’s transmission fluid is by putting cardboard under your car and keeping an eye on the color of the leaking fluid. Transmission fluid will typically be bright red in color, though it may also have a dark red appearance.

3. Dashboard warning light

Most vehicles have highly advanced systems in place to detect problems before the problem is even noticeable to the driver, so if your check engine light illuminates, you probably don’t want to ignore it. Identifying a problem early is key to saving yourself some money on transmission repairs, so make sure you pay attention to what your vehicle is trying to tell you.

How does GMC’s Lane Departure Warning System work?

GMC Lane Departure Warning System

Automakers are constantly working to make sure their vehicles are as safe as possible, and as technology gets more and more advanced, safety features can be a little tricky to understand. GMC’s Lane Departure Alert is now available on a wide variety of vehicles in the manufacturer’s lineup, so we’re breaking down how exactly this advanced safety system works. Read on for details!

You might also be interested in: How to connect your smartphone to GMC’s Bluetooth® system

GMC Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning

GMC’s Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning uses a camera sensor located on the windshield to detect lane markings on the road. The system operates while the vehicle is travelling between 37 mph and 112 mph, and it’s designed to help drivers avoid collisions while on the road. If the Lane Departure Warning System determines that the vehicle is unintentionally deviating from its lane, the driver will be warned with audio, visual and sensory cues. If the driver takes no corrective measures to stay within the lane lines, the Lane Keep Assist system may kick in and provide steering assistance to keep the vehicle in its lane.

So does this mean that every time you try to change lanes while driving, the system is going to alert you that you’re leaving your lane? Definitely not. The system recognizes that a lane change is intentional when a blinker is used.
