How to prevent your car from overheating

Check for leaks

Although a leak in the cooling system doesn’t directly lead to an overheated engine, the two are closely related. When the cooling system leaks, coolant levels drop, allowing air to enter in and circulate throughout the system. When the air rises to the top of the cooling system, an airlock occurs, which basically means that big bubble is stuck in the cooling system. In turn, the coolant remaining inside the engine becomes heated, causing the engine to eventually overheat.

Change oil on time

Changing your engine oil on time is actually pretty important if you want to keep your car from overheating. Although it isn’t commonly known, engine oil is a vital component to keeping the engine cool. Oil lubricates the engine parts to prevent the parts from rubbing together and causing friction, and if the oil is old, it won’t properly do its job. Parts causing friction creates heat inside the engine, which can and probably will lead to overheating.

Make sure coolant is concentrated

If you’re buying coolant from the store, you’re going to want to make sure you read the instructions before dumping it into your vehicle. While some coolants come pre-mixed, a huge variety of coolants available at the store aren’t concentrated. If the coolant isn’t ready-to-use straight out of the bottle, make sure you follow the instructions to get the correct concentration.
