Chevy Truck History

While the 2016 Chevy Silverado and the 2016 Chevy Colorado may not have a ton in common visually with the original trucks from Chevrolet, the company’s devotion to offering a high-quality hard-working vehicle hasn’t wavered. Since the very first Chevy truck rolled off the production line almost 100 years ago, Chevy truck history has been full of excellent vehicles that go above and beyond in their capability.

Chevy Truck Beginnings: 1918 Chevy 490

Coincidentally (or maybe not!), Chevy’s official first entries into the truck market were in 1918, the same year that General Motors officially united with the McLaughlin company and started what would become GM Canada. The first truck was a half-ton, Light Delivery Cowl Chassis mounted with a pickup bed (picture in the main blog image). A 1918 Chevy “Model T” was also available that was a full ton. This baby had an entire 37 horsepower (quite different from some of the engine options available in Chevy trucks today!) and could go up to 40 kilometers per hour (25 mph).

A New Era of Chevy Truck History: the 1930s

Cowl chassis were replaced in the 1930s with new, steel-body half-ton pickups with factory-installed beds and a remarkable new inline six-cylinder engine. These advances greatly increased the power and capability that these trucks could bring to the work site.

In 1937, Chevrolet revolutionized the truck industry with a new streamlined body style, a stronger structure, and an engine that could crank out 78 horsepower.

1947 Chevrolet Advance Design Truck

After World War II, Chevrolet again broke new ground in the pickup category with the attractive and work-friendly Advance Design 3000 Series. With improved visibility for the driver, a wide pickup box, and a more spacious and comfortable cabin, this pickup offered truck customers features they had been clamoring for. This was also the time period when consumer demand for trucks in North America really began to take off.

Looking at Chevy truck history, it’s easy to see how quality has been present from the very earliest days of the truck. From the early models that we just wrote about, to the stylish 1959 Chevy El Camino pickup utility vehicle (that looks like a cross between a pickup and a muscle-car) to the modern day Silverado equipped with eAssist, Chevy trucks have always been pushing the envelope on what can be achieved.

2018 Chevrolet Colorado Vs. 2018 Honda Ridgeline

When it comes to fitting capability into a nimble and parkable package, midsize pickup trucks go the distance. Smaller than half-ton trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, this class lets drivers have the cargo carrying and towing ability they need without sacrificing the smaller nature of a sedan or crossover.

For years, the Chevrolet Colorado has been a staple and leader in this class. Delivering Chevrolet’s rock-solid reliability, a substantial number of configurations and an interior that is likely to let you forget you’re in a truck, the Colorado is a small truck that doesn’t ask you to make big compromises.

[READ MORE: 2018 Chevy Colorado Interior Space and Cargo Volume]

When it comes to seeing just how groundbreaking the Chevrolet Colorado has been for drivers in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba and beyond, one of the best things you can do is compare it to other models in its class. Today, we’re going to be matching up the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado with Honda’s unibody midsize truck, the Ridgeline.

While Chevrolet employs classic body-on-frame construction for their Colorado, the Ridgeline prefers crossover/car-grade unibody building.  Despite this substantial difference in approach, the two models compete in the same class. Here’s how they measure up!

[table “20” not found /]

Get the Capable and Configurable Colorado at Craig Dunn Motor City!

As you can see in the above chart, the two trucks are hardly comparable. Setting aside the pricing difference, the Colorado and Ridgeline are built for very different purposes. While the Colorado gives you the configurability and choices of a larger pickup truck, the Ridgeline prefers a one-size-fits-all approach that just doesn’t line up with what we know about pickup truck drivers.

For the Colorado, this tailored approach means being able to deliver massive fuel efficiency or over 300 horsepower, depending on your preference.

We’d love to show you the incredible capability and amazing features of the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado in person. Contact us today to schedule a test drive!

2016 Chevy Colorado vs 2015 Chevy Colorado

With 2016 model year General Motors vehicles beginning to appear on dealerships across Canada even before the 2015 models have been sold, it can be a challenge to wade through features and details to decide which model is best for you. While the clearance prices and financing options on 2015 models can be pretty alluring, it can be hard sometimes to make the choice between a deal and the latest in technology options. So if you’ve been wondering what’s new between the 2016 Chevy Colorado vs 2015 Chevy Colorado keep reading to see a few of the options new for this coming model year.

Chevy Colorado Duramax Diesel

We’ve posted before about the Duramax diesel option that will be available on the 2016 Chevy Colorado, but it’s worth repeating, because diesel engines offer a host of advantages in longevity and efficiency that we think appeal to anyone wanting a reliable work truck or an efficient commuting vehicle. The 2.8-liter Duramax turbo diesel engine coming to the 2016 Chevy Colorado should be pretty awesome.Silver 2016 Chevy Colorado

Available Specialty Editions

The 2016 Chevy Colorado will also be available in an all-black Midnight Edition and a Z71 Trail Boss Edition optimized for off-roading.

Integrated Trailer Brake Controller

Sometimes your trailer wheels will lock up if the weight of the trailer isn’t matched to the braking force applied. With the brake control options newly available on the 2016 Chevy Colorado the braking force applied to your trailer can be optimized to match the weight it is carrying, hopefully giving you even better, and safer, braking abilities.

Enhanced Infotainment Options

Another new feature coming to the 2016 Chevy Colorado is an improved driver information centre in the gauge cluster of the LT and Z71 trims. Featuring an enhanced multicoloured display, this feature should offer even better technology integration options.

What can I tow with the 2017 Chevy Colorado?

If you own weekend toys such as a boat, camper, dirt bike or off-road vehicle, you’re going to need to tow or haul the cargo at some point. One of the most important things to keep in mind when shopping for a new vehicle that will be used for towing is the vehicle’s towing capacity. We already know that the 2017 Chevy Colorado has a best-in-class towing capacity among mid-size pickups, but what exactly can you haul with the 2017 Colorado?

As you can see from the chart above, the maximum towing capacity of the 2017 Chevy Colorado is 7,700 pounds when combined with the available Tow/Haul Mode. But what does that mean exactly? When determining what you can tow with your 2017 Colorado, you’ll want to take a variety of factors into account. You should factor in weight of passengers, trailer weight and cargo weight before determining what your 2017 Colorado can tow. That being said, towing dirt bikes, a small camper or a small boat should be a pretty safe bet for your truck. For more information about Chevy truck hauling and towing capacities, click here.

2016 Chevy Colorado: Most fuel efficient truck in Canada!

We’ve talked in the past about the advantages of diesel fuel. One of the biggies is that diesel (when properly handled to minimize emissions and environmental damage) is extremely fuel efficient. Now we have even more exciting news about the 2016 Chevy Colorado’s fuel efficiency!

2016 Chevy Colorado diesel fuel consumption

The two-wheel drive 2016 Chevy Colorado offers a fuel consumption rating of just 7.7 L/100km with the diesel engine when driving on the highway. It also offers 10.8 L/100km in city driving for an combined fuel consumption number of 9.4 L/100km.

New Colorado InventoryThe four-wheel drive 2016 Chevy Colorado diesel still offers an impressive 8.2 L/100km highway fuel consumption rating, with 12.0 L/100km and 10.3 L/100km for city and combined driving, respectively.

2016 Chevy Colorado Duramax diesel release date

The new Colorado also offers top capabilities in categories other than fuel efficiency. It has a maximum trailering rating of 7,700 pounds (3,492 kg) with the two-wheel drive when properly equipped and up to 7,600 pounds (3,447 kg) for four wheel drive models with the available trailering package.

All of this this thanks in large part of the new Duramax 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, which is rated for 181 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. In a recent press release, Joe De Stefano, brand manager of Chevrolet Trucks in Canada said, “The Colorado Duramax diesel sets a new benchmark in the mid-size pickup segment in Canada. “Colorado gas models are extremely popular with our customers and the addition of the new diesel – which no other non-GM competitor offers on a midsize truck – gives customers even greater freedom to go where they want with fewer fill-ups.”

That sounds pretty excellent to us! Also keep an eye for this Duramax Diesel engine to be available on 2016 GMC Canyon this fall along with the 2016 Chevy Colorado.

Why do cars even need grilles?

Vehicles these days all have different grill sizes, from the lean lines of the Chevy Camaro to the wide intake lines of the GMC Sierra, and the shape of the grille can define the style of the car, from stylish, to aggressive, to downright weird. But looking at the array of different shapes and sizes of grilles even on the Chevy, GMC, and Buick vehicles on the lot at Craig Dunn begs the question “Why do cars even need grilles?” We investigated, so keep reading for the best answer we could find.

New GM Inventory

What do car grilles do?

While the look of a grille is certainly vitally important for customer satisfaction, each grille also plays a very important role in cooling the vehicle’s engine, specifically the radiator. Without some way for air to flow into the engine compartment, a car would pose a major risk of overheating. While many modern cars could get enough air cooling through vents underneath the vehicle (and so could skip the front grille) it’s more effective and cool to have a grille in the front.

So while the grille is important, that leave a lot of leeway for how it actually looks. Just by looking at grille designs through the ages (and a handful of modern options) it’s easy to see that the grille can define the style of the car.

GMC Canyon Active Grille technology for improved truck performance
1914 Grand Baby Chevrolet view of the grille and lights
grille and front of 2015 Chevrolet Silverado

New grille technology can improve performance

While grilles come in all shapes and sizes, some technology using them can even improve performance. Many modern cars like the 2016 Chevy Volt and the 2016 GMC Canyon have aerodynamic technology that will close some of the grille grating when the vehicle is moving at top speeds. This reduces drag and improved aerodynamic flow. Other vehicles like the elite performance trims of the Chevy Camaro have specializes airflow paths built into the hood so that air can easily move through the engine and out in such a way that the Camaro can maintain its tight hold on the track and efficiently cool the radiator.

Basically, cars do still need grilles, and every year they are getting cooler than ever.
