What Is a Differential on a Car or Truck?

A differential, when one is talking about vehicles, is a mechanical piece of the car, truck, or SUV which allows the powered-wheels to turn at different speeds. This would be the front wheels in front-wheel-drive, the rear in rear-wheel drive, and all wheels on all-wheel drive. This is necessary because when taking turns the wheels need to go different distances, and if they both always moved at the same speed you would end up damaging your tires and possibly other mechanical parts.

Why Is a Locking Differential A Good Thing

While in general driving you want your wheels to be able to spin independently for comfortable turning, this can result in a loss of traction in some circumstances. If one wheel slips on ice, the differential may continue sending power to that wheel, causing it to spin, while the wheel that has not slipped may have less power.

Also if one wheel gets stuck, but the other is free (like what might happen when off-roading in mud or over rocks) then the differential might continue sending power to that wheel, making it spin wildly, while not really helping you get out of the mud.

automatic locking rear differential on a 2015 GMC CanyonWith a locking differential (whether automatic, or activated by the driver), the powered wheels can be united. This allows drivers to have better traction, and can be extremely helpful either for getting out of mud and snow, climbing rocks on the trail, or maintaining traction in a snow storm.

While a driver shouldn’t keep their differential locked in highway driving, it can be very useful when off-roading, or in some high-performance driving situations. Some vehicles that feature locking differentials include off-road models of the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado, and the 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1.

How Do I Set Up RemoteLink?

The RemoteLink Key Fob system from OnStar available in Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles can do some pretty neat things (you can learn more about what in our post on the subject) but now it’s time to get real. This is a pretty neat device but how can you set up RemoteLink? We have some step by step instructions, and a neat video on some of the cool things you can do with this system.

How Do I Set Up RemoteLink?

First of all, make sure that your vehicle and phone are compatible with the RemoteLink system. Most 2015 and 2016 Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles have this capability. Apple, Android, Blackberry and Windows phones are compatible, depending on the operating system.

Read More: Best Features of the 2016 Chevy MalibuSecond, if you are not yet registered at OnStar.com with a username and password, you will have to set that up (remember, some of these services may only be included with an internet plan, and others may not be available in some regions). You can set up your OnStar username and password here, on the top where it says “Sign Up” (you can also find a complete list of compatible cars and phones on that page).

What can you do with OnStar RemoteLink? Check out this video!

Next, download the RemoteLink App. It is available on iTunes, Google Play, Blackberry App World or the Windows app store. Be sure to have your username and password ready to go.

Once it is downloaded, you will launch the app and enter your onstar.com username and password. You will also have to enter your OnStar account number and zip code. This can be emailed to you if you don’t remember it.

In the last step you will be encouraged to create a new username and password just for RemoteLink, and then you should be good to go with your new smartphone-to-car connection!

Chevy Truck Performance Capabilities

Chevy Truck Capabilities

Buying a new vehicle is a big commitment, that’s why it is important to do your research before making a purchase. One important thing to discover is a vehicle’s performance capabilities, this is particularly important when it comes to pickup trucks. People who buy trucks needs them to perform and get a lot of work done, whether it involves towing, hauling, getting through rough terrain or all of the above. Today we’re going to take a look at the unique Chevy truck capabilities.

One important feature that helps improve the performance capabilities of a truck, is traction. whether the weather is winter or summer you’re going to need a truck that can handle the various conditions you’ll encounter. Luckily, Chevy trucks come with an automatic locking rear axle that helps them move with confidence and control. This locking rear axle is referred to as the G80. The rear axle locks automatically if one wheel starts to spin, enabling both rear wheels to propel the truck. This added traction makes a two-wheel drive pickup just as capable as a 4×4 pickup.

The G80 automatic locking rear axle is available on most Silverado models, some Colorado models, and it standard on the Tahoe and Suburban. The G80 provides more traction than a conventional limited-slip axle. The limit-slip axle actually limits the amount of traction-enhancing torque that can be channeled to the faster-rotating wheel. The G80 actually engages and disengages automatically with no input from the driver. The lockup and disengagement processes happen instantly.

If you are interested in learning more about Chevy trucks and their capabilities call or visit Craig Dunn Motor City today. We will be able to answer any further questions you might have about these impressive vehicles. They can even help you schedule a test drive so you can see these vehicles in action.

What Is A Differential (and Why Is It Nice For Them To Lock)?

What Is a Differential on a Car or Truck?

If you are thinking about buying a new truck or SUV for off-roading or rough country roads (like the 2017 GMC Sierra All Terrain, you may have seen phrases like “electronically locking differential” or “limited slip differential” being thrown around. But what is a differential on a car or truck, and why is locking one useful for off-road adventuring? Keep reading to find out more.

Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve Technology

Along with front and rear electronically locking differentials, the Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers on the 2017 Chevy Colorado ZR2 contribute to its ability to attack the track, the trail, or the daily commute with equal aplomb. While most vehicle dampers offers deflected-disk valving,  the DSSV dampers from Multimatic Inc. offer much better precision on and off the road.

The position-sensitive DSSV dampers house two spool valves that smooth both compression and rebound damping. A third, piston-mounted spool valve can also deliver additional compression damping during intense off-roading, and the front dampers have a separate rebound valve for use in rough driving, for example over rocks.

Do Other Vehicles Have Multimatic DSSV Dampers?

Multimatic DSSV damper technology was first used in the 2014 model of the Chevy Camaro Z/28 to allow that performance vehicle to handle intense track conditions with confidence. Their use in the 2017 Chevy Colorado ZR2 is the first time they have been applied to an off-road optimized vehicle.

GM Puts Vehicles to the Test

GM Performance Tests

When it comes to developing high performance vehicles, there are a lot of factors that come into play. Once the vehicle is designed are created, there is still work to be done. Automotive companies must test these vehicles to make sure that they are able to handle any driving condition. It is important for car companies to ensure that their vehicles are safe and can perform in a variety of conditions. Let’s explore what kind of GM performance tests that GM vehicles go through.

One of the many tests GM vehicles go through is the Milford Road Course that was developed under the leadership of Bob Lutz, the former GM vice chairman. The course is 4.5 kilometres long and includes 17 turns, each designed to test a specific performance requirement. There is also a straightaway that lets GM test vehicles at speeds above 240 km/h. The course helps test handling, steering, braking and more. Driving these tracks is a very small but vital part of the testing process.

This year is the 90th year of the Milford Road Course. This course helps ensure that GM vehicles are the best in the world. The performance testing uses professional drivers and expert engineers to determine the results of the test drives. Engineers work hard to prove that these vehicles are ready to hit the road in the real world. While testing used to be about whether or not the vehicle could make to from one point to another, the tests now make sure that the journey is exciting as well as efficient.

If you want a first hand look at the vehicles that have passed these test with flying colors, visit us at Craig Dunn Motor City. All of our vehicles are road ready. Schedule a test drive and see which Chevy, Buick or GMC vehicle is the right choice for your driving needs.

2017 Chevy Bolt EV One-Pedal Driving

When some people drive, you could joke that they use only one pedal: the accelerator. However, with the 2017 Chevy Bolt EV that joke can be a reality in some situations. One-pedal driving on this electric vehicle can offer top efficiency. Keep reading to learn more about 2017 Chevy Bolt EV one-pedal driving and the fuel savings that are possible with this vehicle.

Read More: How Can the eAssist Powertrain Help Fuel Consumption?

How Does 2017 Chevy Bolt EV One-Pedal Driving Work?

information screen in the 2017 Chevy Bolt EVUsing four different select-able modes, drivers of the 2017 Bolt EV are able to choose the optimal driving experience. When operating in Drive and simply easing off the accelerator, regenerative braking will kick in to help transfer the energy lost from deceleration into fresh battery power. Using the Regen on Demand paddle on the steering wheel can even increase this effect, and work to partially slow the vehicle without the use of the brake.

When operating in the Low driving mode, drivers can again easy off the accelerator and preserve a good amount of energy. Using the Regen on Demand paddle in this situation can greatly slow the 2017 Chevy Bolt, and even bring it to a complete stop without the use of the brake pedal (in some situations).

The 2017 Chevy Bolt EV should be able to provide up to 320 kilometers of electric range when fully charged.

Will the Chevy Bolt Come to Manitoba?

While nothing exactly like these select-able modes and one-pedal braking is available on most GM vehicles, advantages like regenerative braking have been used on models like the 2016 GMC Sierra with eAssist powertrain.

We are confident that some day the premium Chevy Bolt EV (or an even better all-electric vehicle) will be available in Manitoba and at Craig Dunn Motor City in Portage La Prairie. However, we do not yet have this vehicle available in our new car inventory. If you are interested in learning more about the possibilities of electric automotive design, feel free to contact one of our sales team!

Safety Alert Seat

Chevy Safety Alert Seat

It is always a challenge to make vehicles safer and more secure with each new model. Safety it important for every vehicle, no matter the make or model. That’s why automotive companies put so much time and energy in creating safety features that can help drivers and passengers stay safe. This year, Chevrolet is introducing an all new feature with the Chevy safety alert seat. This new technology uses vibration pulses to help alert the driver and avoid crashes.

No matter how cautious of a driver you are, accidents can still happen. That’s why GM has developed this Chevy safety alert seat. This new driver’s seat technology re-creates the sense of touch by using left and/or right “tapping” vibration pulses to direct the driver to the location of the threat. This feature is already available on select 2015 Chevy models including the Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe. This is a particularly useful feature for hearing-impaired drivers. This gives an added alert that can help prevent collisions.

This vibration technique used in the Chevy’s Safety Alert Seat is called haptics. Similar technology is actually used in space and military applications. It can help cut through visual and auditory clutter to reach the driver’s attention in a different manner. This feature works in partnership with the lane departure warning. When the camera detects a vehicle is leaving the lane without an active turn signal in that direction, small motors generate the vibration pulse. This also works with the forward collision alert technology.

This is just one of the many innovative safety features that Chevrolet and GM have developed. It is always exciting to see what the skilled engineers and experts of GM develop for new vehicles. To see what other safety features these vehicles have to offer and schedule a test drive at Craig Dunn Motor City today! We look forward to matching you with the perfect new Chevy, Buick or GMC vehicle.

Chevy Vehicles Help Prevent Collisions

Every year car companies work hard to make vehicles safer by adding new safety features and technologies. The automotive industry has come a long way in terms of safety. Now rear cameras are becoming standard features and even more innovative features are being tested. This year Chevy is helping drivers prevent rear crashes. Tailgating is one of the major causes of collisions and Chevy vehicles help prevent collisions with their recent safety technology developments in this area.

One of these specific features is the Forward Collision Alert. This is available on many 2015 Chevy vehicles including the Silverado, Malibu, Equinox and Traverse. This innovative feature alerts drivers when they are seconds away from a crash or when they are following the vehicle too closely. Another key safety feature is the Front Automatic Braking which is available on the 2015 Chevy Impala, Tahoe and Suburban. This feature goes a step further than alerting and is able to automatically stop or slow down the vehicle under certain conditions if the driver does not respond quickly to an alert.

Many accidents occur when the car in front of a driver slows down or brakes suddenly. Chevy is making it possible to avoid these situations by providing alerts that assist the driver. The collision alert not only provides visual cues but also audible cues to make sure the driver is aware of any impending danger. Low speed crashes aren’t as likely to cause severe injuries, but they are responsible for millions of dollars worth the damage in repair cost. Avoiding accidents is just one of the many benefits of driving a Chevy vehicle.

Does Chevy Start/Stop Technology help fuel efficiency?

Benefits of Chevy Start/Stop Technology

Each year new technologies are created to make vehicles more fuel efficient. Most drivers can all agree that better fuel economy is a good thing, both for your wallet and your vehicle. One feature that is helping with this mission is Start/Stop technology. This feature is extremely helpful, but many drivers aren’t quite sure what it is and how it works. Today we’re going to take a closer look by examining the benefits of Chevy start/stop technology.

What is Start/Stop Technology?

The first thing you might be wondering is, what is it? Start/Stop technology is becoming a more common feature and is available with many vehicles, including the 2015 Chevy Malibu. This feature is designed to minimize fuel consumption by automatically shutting off the engine when the car comes to a stop at a red light or in traffic. When the driver takes their foot off the brake, the engine automatically restarts and is ready to continue forward.

How effective is Start/Stop Technology?

Now you might be wondering, but does this thing really work? Chevy has discovered that the Chevrolet Malibu with 2.5L engine has more than 10 percent improvement in city fuel efficiency with this start-stop technology. Each year it is being added to more and more of the Chevy lineup and is now available on the 2016 Chevy Cruze. Other features Chevy has been developing to help improve fuel efficiency include:

  • Rack Electric Power Steering
  • Deceleration Fuel Cut-Off
  • Idle Speed Reduction
  • Optimized Tire Rolling Resistance
  • Aerodynamic Drag Reduction
  • Electronic Returnless Fuel System
  • Regulated Voltage Control

Chevrolet is constantly working hard to develop new and exciting features that drivers will love. Check back here at Craig Dunn Motor City often to learn more about new vehicles and features that are coming soon and will improve your driving experience.

Chevy Builds Partnership to Optimize Trailering Technology

Chevy Partners with RVIA and NATM

There are plenty of reasons that families and individuals want premium towing power. Whether they need to haul a horse trailer to a fair around Manitoba, or enjoy moving a boat or serious cargo with ease, it is important for truck owners to have competent and easy-to-use trailering options. To make current advanced Chevy towing technology even better, Chevrolet has partnered with two other groups. With the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) and the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM), Chevrolet plans to make even better options for customer’s trailering needs.

We don’t have news about what advanced Chevy towing technology may come out of these partnerships. However, here at Craig Dunn Motor City we think that even more intuitive and driver-optimized towing technology will be on the way. There have already been some recent advances making towing and hauling much easier.

Chevy truck owners can already enjoy several advnaced features when it comes to trailering with confidence. Some of them include an elite trailering camera that can show a view from up to four locations in and around a trailer; digital steering assistance first available on the 2016 Chevy Silverado HD, and a convenient 5th wheel trailering packages that allows drivers to have their trucks optimized for heavy hauling straight from the factory floor.

“Our owners are often towing something, from an RV to construction equipment, that is more valuable than their truck,” said Tim Herrick, General Motors future truck executive chief engineer, in a recent Chevy press release. “Unequivocally, they tell us that they are looking for a better towing experience. Safer, easier, with more integration between their trailer and their truck.”

Keep watching the Craig Dunn Motor City blog, or contact a member of our sales team, to learn more about advanced Chevy towing technology available now and coming in the future.

2016 Chevy Camaro Engine Makes Ward’s 10 Best Engines List

We already knew that the 2016 Chevy Camaro was an excellent, powerful and engaging muscle car, but now there is even more proof that it’s not just a pretty face or an iconic nameplate. This year the all-new 3.6-litre engine in the 2016 Camaro was recognized by WardsAuto magazine as one of the ten best engines of the year for its outstanding power, feel, and fuel-saving technology.

Available on the 2016 Camaro LT, the winning 3.6-litre V6 is rated for a breathless 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque. That is the highest specific output of any of the segment’s naturally aspirated V6. GM leaders are proud of their powertrain and research and development teams, and the engine gained praise for it’s power, but also its pricing and feel.“The 3.6 delivers the kind of power and lusty exhaust note you associate with a V-8 for the price of a V-6. Plus, it’s loaded with advanced technology, including fuel-saving cylinder deactivation,” said Drew Winter, director, Content at WardsAuto, in a recent Chevrolet press release.

The winning 3.6-litre engine also features multiple fuel-saving technologies. The Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system is one which allows the engine to disable two cylinders when optimal power and accleration are not required. Direct injection and continuously variable valve timing also allow the Chevy Camaro with this engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission to get about 10.2 L/100km in city driving and about 8.4 L/100km in city driving.
