Chevy Takes Four Dependability Awards in J.D. Powers Study

How dependable are Chevy vehicles?

How dependable are Chevy vehicles?

It can be hard to measure the dependability of a new vehicle. Often, when you are shopping for a new car, you will ask family and friends for their vehicle experiences and do a little research as well. If you are looking specifically at the Chevrolet brand and want to know how dependable are Chevy vehicles, you are in lucks. Chevy took four dependability awards in a recent J.D. Powers Study. Keep reading for details.

What Chevy Models Won 2016 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Awards?

The J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study looks a wide selection of three-year-old vehicles, and measures owner satisfaction and dependability in the last several months. Have owners needed to bring the cars into the shop, or been irritated by a slow infotainment system? J.D. Power then ranks each vehicle in it’s segment. This year the Chevy brand as a whole ranked in the top ten, with four vehicles taking the top place in their respective segments.

2013 Chevy Malibu rated most dependable midsize car 2016
2013 Chevy Camaro ranked most dependable midsize sporty car 2016
The Chevy Malibu took the J.D. Powers award for the Midsize Car category for the second year in a row. Earlier this year, the 2016 Chevy Malibu was also chosen as one of Kelley Blue Book’s top family car picks, thanks to its low fuel consumption, spacious interior, and top safety ratings.
For the fourth-year-running, the Chevy Camaro dominated in the Midsize Sporty Car category. This means that the 2013 Camaro pictured below will give you minimal problems, while delivering premium power. The new Camaro has also been honored on the Ward’s 10 Best Engines List.
2013 Chevy Equinox topped Compact SUV dependability study
2013 Chevy Silverado HD most dependable heavy duty truck
In the Compact SUV category, the Chevy Equinox took a dependability acknowledgment for the first time. This high-quality and extremely versatile vehicle is ideal for families that want to split the difference between car-handling and SUV capability. And, even better, it’s built in Canada!
The Chevy Silverado HD also took a segment Award in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup category for its second year in a row. The light-duty Silverado also took third place in the rankings for Large Light Duty Pickups, which means that Chevy truck drivers can rely on a dependable truck no matter the capability.

In the 2016 J.D. Powers Dependability Study, the Chevy Tahoe also took second in the Large SUV Category, and the GMC and Buick brands also stood out as impressively reliable.

Tips and tricks for increasing your engine’s lifespan

Don’t drive on “E”

Although it’s easy to not notice your fuel levels slowly depleting, it’s important to avoid hitting empty. Sediment from gas or diesel settles at the bottom of your fuel tank as time goes on, and driving on empty causes the fuel pump to send grit through the fuel lines. Driving on E is also dangerous because fuel in the tank helps cool the fuel pump, so having less than a quarter tank of fuel can cause overheating.

Avoid slamming brakes and putting the pedal to the metal

It can be fun to show off your car’s quick acceleration, but it’s not a race and you don’t have to beat every other car on the road off the line at a stoplight. Quick acceleration not only affects your fuel economy, but it also puts unnecessary stress on your engine. Slamming the brakes is not only hard on your brake pads, but your engine and transmission may be affected as well.

Don’t ignore your vehicle’s needs

Your vehicle comes with a special set of instructions that are meant to keep your vehicle running in tip-top shape for years down the road. Ignoring these regular maintenance recommendations can have a pretty negative effect on your vehicle’s health, so make sure you stay up to date with oil changes, tire rotations, and the like.

What happens if you don’t change your car’s oil on time?

Why you should follow your oil change schedule

If you happen to forget to change the oil in your vehicle for a little longer than suggested, it’s not the end of the world but it can be pretty detrimental to your car’s engine. Many car owners don’t realize just how vitally important regularly changing the vehicle’s engine oil is, and our team here at Craig Dunn Motor City wants to make sure your car stays happy and healthy for years down the road. Wondering what happens if you don’t change your car’s oil on time? Read on to find out!

Why you should change your oil on time

Many car owners realize that oil is an vital factor to keeping their engine running properly, but many are unaware of just how important it is to change the engine oil on time. The oil acts as a lubricant to keep all of the engine parts moving together the way they are supposed to, so if the engine oil is old the parts may rub together and cause friction. This is bad for a few reasons. When the engine parts rub together, the metal-on-metal creates heat, which can cause the parts themselves to weld together. When this happens, the engine seizes, leading to very expensive repairs. Another thing that can happen when you don’t change your engine oil on time is that dirt will accumulate in the oil, which can clog the filter. When the filter is clogged, the engine will quickly wear out, again leading to expensive repairs. So simply put, make sure you change your oil on time unless you want to spend a bunch of money fixing or replacing your engine!

In addition to the warranty that comes standard with any new vehicle purchase, the GM Maintenance plans keep your vehicle in first-rate condition and work with the recommended maintenance schedule of your vehicle. They are honoured by any certified Chevrolet, Buick or GMC dealer across Canada or the U.S. so you are taken care of whether you are home in the Winnipeg area or on a cross-country road trip.

The Essential Care Maintenance Plan covers all the basics like oil changes, tire rotation, vehicles check-ups, replacement air filters for the engine and cabin, and top-offs for your coolant, transmission fluid, transfer case fluid and brake fluid.

The Enhanced Care Maintenance Plan has everything the Essential Care plan has, plus coverage for your brake pads, rotors, lining and drums, engine hoses and belts, wiper blades and some shocks and bulbs.

Do you put serious kilometers on your tires, or know that you will be driving your GMC, Chevy, or Buick vehicle on rough roads? You might want to look into a GM Tire Protection Plan. The plans will offset the cost of tire repair, replacement, and even roadside assistance. Anytime you purchase a vehicle you are eligible for a three, four or five year plan, each of which covers unlimited kilometers.

Is My Pickup Truck Overloaded?

While it might be tempting to think that your truck can handle anything you can load into the cabin and bed (anyone here a puzzle expert?) the damage you can do to your vehicle from overloading is serious and not always obvious. While you probably won’t kill your truck by hauling a few (hundred) extra kilos in the back, you can definitely put a strain on it that it wasn’t designed to handle.
Mechanic looking at wheel and axel

Common truck damage from overloading

The strain of overloading isn’t good for your vehicle, whether it suffers from regular wear and tear or just hits that bump in the road even once. Some common issues include:

  • broken or fatigued springs
  • damaged axel and pinion seals
  • worn bearings
  • serious damage to your shocks

While we at Craig Dunn Motor City are happy to help you with all your service needs, it’s always best to avoid needing to make a trip to the shop (even if you can make a service appointment online!).

To figure out how much you can safely fit in your truck, take the gross vehicle weight rating (that is, the maximum weight that your truck is certified to handle) and subtract the weight of the truck and yourself (and any passengers) while driving. So if you have a two-wheel drive 2015 Chevy Silverado Regular Cab that has gross vehicle weight rating of 2948 kg and a curb weight of 2051 kg, you and your cargo combined can weight up to 885 kg. Check out our inventory to see other options that may offer greater payload capacity!

The occasional overloaded truck may not seriously damage anything, but if you don’t have much of a choice (or are willing to take the risk) be sure to take the journey slow and be super aware of any unusual sounds or reactions from your truck. Remember that the load your pickup can handle in the bed and cabin is a lot less than what you can safely tow.

Safe hauling and towing and we hope to see you when you want to upgrade to the latest Chevy Silverado or other Chevy and GM truck!!

Solutions for the 5.3 GM engine burning oil

Solutions for the 5.3 GM engine burning oil

There can be few things as frustrating as driving along from oil change to oil change and gradually realizing that your truck is going through more oil than a deep-fryer during the lunch rush. If you have an older GMC Sierra or other GM truck with a 5.3-liter engine, know that you are not alone. While having performance affecting flaws in your vehicle can be frustrating, know that there are solutions for the 5.3 GM engine burning oil that can keep your pickup running smooth (and don’t require you to start shopping for that brand new Sierra).

First off, the General Motors standard for acceptable oil usage in the Sierra is 0.946 liter every 3200 km. If you notice that your truck is regularly running above that (or it just feels high to you) it’s can never hurt to make an appointment at your local shop for an oil consumption test.

Mechanic holding a wrench with determination One common problem seen in the 5.3-liter engine is a failure of the valve cover to seal, which can cause heavy oil burn. Depending on the wear-and-tear on your vehicles, you may be able to get away with having the rings cleaned and getting a replacement valve cover that will seal again. Trucks that have been around the block a few more times (and built up the kilometer count) may need replacement rings and pistons to take care of the problem.

Here at Craig Dunn Motor City we are dedicated to making all aspects of vehicle ownership run as smoothly as we can. We offer a wide variety of repair and maintenance services, as well as an impressive inventory of new vehicles for your driving enjoyment.

Sudden Loss of Engine Power? We Might Have An Answer

Why Is My Chevy Silverado Losing Power?

While generally the Chevy Silverado is a premium, reliable truck, there are times when even the best vehicles can end up having problems. If you’ve ever had your Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra suddenly lose power, you may be wondering exactly what is going on with your truck. Keep reading to find at least one possible answer to “Why is my Chevy Silverado losing power?”

Read More: How Can You Tell If Your Pickup Is Overloaded?

If your GM truck occasionally loses the ability to accelerate and warns you of reduced engine power, that could be caused by a faulty throttle body. While not common, this issue can interfere with your engine function and cause your vehicle to lose power anywhere from once in a while to several times in a day. When given a digital diagnostic, the vehicle scan will tell you there is an issue with the throttle body. This is a sign that your truck’s throttle body should be replaced.
A damaged throttle body from a car may cause a loss of engine power

What is a Throttle Body?

A throttle body is a butterfly valve in between the intake manifold and the air intake filter. Connected to the gas pedal, it is responsible for making sure that there is enough air entering your engine to meeting driving and accelerating demands. It works together with the Engine Control Unit to balance the right mix of air and fuel in your engine for the best power and performance.

When the throttle body is dirty, damaged, or just not receiving the right signals, airflow can be cut off to your engine. Without air, your engine cannot run and will stall out. This can be a serious issue, but fortunately it is not a hard one to fix. Simply replacing the throttle body should resolve the issue. Make your appointment online today at Craig Dunn Motor City near Winnipeg MB if you are having engine issues with your truck, and we will do our best to get you back on the road and good as new.

If you are concerned about mechanical issues with the new 2016 Chevy Silverado, remember that the complimentary Chevrolet Complete Care program comes standard with every new Chevy. That means that basic repairs and any freak mechanical errors will be covered for up to five years at low or minimal cost to you.

Why is my oil light still on after an oil change?

You never want to ignore an illuminated dashboard warning light, especially if it stays on after you have already taken action to fix the problem. There are a variety of reasons your oil light may stay illuminated even after an oil change, and it’s important to be aware of possible causes. Read on for details!

Causes of a flickering oil light

If your oil light stays on even after changing your engine oil, you’re going to want to check the sensor first to rule out a malfunctioning sensor as the cause. Dirt and other particles can make their way into the oil pump, causing the sensor to falsely identify oil issues. Replacing the sensor is fairly simple, but if you don’t feel comfortable replacing the part yourself, bring your vehicle into a certified technician. The next common cause is low oil pressure. If the oil pressure is below 5 pounds per square inch, your oil light will illuminate. Although this shouldn’t happen after receiving an oil change, you’re still going to want to check the oil level just to be sure.

The final common cause of an illuminated oil light, even after an oil change, is probably the most problematic. The oil pump may not be circulating enough oil to keep the engine’s parts lubricated and functioning properly, which can in turn cause multiple engine issues. Although receiving oil changes at regular intervals should prevent this problem from occurring, parts do wear over time.
