What Is a Differential on a Car or Truck?

A differential, when one is talking about vehicles, is a mechanical piece of the car, truck, or SUV which allows the powered-wheels to turn at different speeds. This would be the front wheels in front-wheel-drive, the rear in rear-wheel drive, and all wheels on all-wheel drive. This is necessary because when taking turns the wheels need to go different distances, and if they both always moved at the same speed you would end up damaging your tires and possibly other mechanical parts.

Read More: All-Wheel Drive vs Four-Wheel Drive

Why Is a Locking Differential A Good Thing

While in general driving you want your wheels to be able to spin independently for comfortable turning, this can result in a loss of traction in some circumstances. If one wheel slips on ice, the differential may continue sending power to that wheel, causing it to spin, while the wheel that has not slipped may have less power.

Also if one wheel gets stuck, but the other is free (like what might happen when off-roading in mud or over rocks) then the differential might continue sending power to that wheel, making it spin wildly, while not really helping you get out of the mud.

automatic locking rear differential on a 2015 GMC CanyonWith a locking differential (whether automatic, or activated by the driver), the powered wheels can be united. This allows drivers to have better traction, and can be extremely helpful either for getting out of mud and snow, climbing rocks on the trail, or maintaining traction in a snow storm.

While a driver shouldn’t keep their differential locked in highway driving, it can be very useful when off-roading, or in some high-performance driving situations. Some vehicles that feature locking differentials include off-road models of the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado, and the 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1.

What Is A Differential (and Why Is It Nice For Them To Lock)?

What Is a Differential on a Car or Truck?

If you are thinking about buying a new truck or SUV for off-roading or rough country roads (like the 2017 GMC Sierra All Terrain, you may have seen phrases like “electronically locking differential” or “limited slip differential” being thrown around. But what is a differential on a car or truck, and why is locking one useful for off-road adventuring? Keep reading to find out more.

Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve Technology

Along with front and rear electronically locking differentials, the Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers on the 2017 Chevy Colorado ZR2 contribute to its ability to attack the track, the trail, or the daily commute with equal aplomb. While most vehicle dampers offers deflected-disk valving,  the DSSV dampers from Multimatic Inc. offer much better precision on and off the road.

The position-sensitive DSSV dampers house two spool valves that smooth both compression and rebound damping. A third, piston-mounted spool valve can also deliver additional compression damping during intense off-roading, and the front dampers have a separate rebound valve for use in rough driving, for example over rocks.

Do Other Vehicles Have Multimatic DSSV Dampers?

Multimatic DSSV damper technology was first used in the 2014 model of the Chevy Camaro Z/28 to allow that performance vehicle to handle intense track conditions with confidence. Their use in the 2017 Chevy Colorado ZR2 is the first time they have been applied to an off-road optimized vehicle.

2016 Chevy Colorado release date

It’s been an exciting couple of days for news on Chevy and GMC 2016 models. One vehicle that will feature a variety of anticipation-worthy options is the Chevy Colorado. This excellent Chevy truck, just redesigned in 2015, is going to come with new, even more impressive options in the coming year, like a diesel engine, the Midnight Edition, and improved off-road possibilities. All this and the 2016 Chevy Colorado release date are our news for the day.

GM Earns Top Customer Loyalty for 2015

GM Wins 2015 IHS Overall Loyalty to Manufacturer Award

We could sit here and talk about the great features of our Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles forever, and how people keep coming back for more of these great cars, trucks and SUVs, but now we have proof! General Motors took the top Overall Loyalty to Manufacturer Award from the IHS for 2015 sales and leases, which means that once you’ve tried a vehicle like the Chevy Colorado, there’s no going back.

The IHS Automotive Loyalty Awards recognize manufacturers and individual car brands for bringing consumers back again and again. They are measured by how many households buy or lease the same vehicle year after year. The 2015 awards are based on sales from October 2014 to September 2015.

Chevy IHS Loyalty Awards

In addition to General Motors having the top brand loyalty, individual vehicles took awards. The Chevy Corvette was acknowledged the most alluring Luxury Sports Car, while the 2016 Chevy Colorado took the lead in the Non-Luxury Mid-size Pickup category.

We can see why the Colorado would have customers coming back again and again. Not only was this truck named the Motor Trend 2016 Truck of the Year, with the new diesel engine this great mid-size truck is Canada’s most fuel-efficient pickup. That’s a lot to love.

The 2016 GMC Yukon Denali XL also took a Loyalty Award as the top Non-Luxury Full-size SUV. While this SUV may not have a luxury price, with the elite Denali trim, it certainly delivers on top features and quality.

New Enhancements Make Chevy Vehicles Roar

2017 Chevy Performance Parts

With the 2016 SEMA Show, Chevrolet has released a number of performance-enhancing parts that will make the Camaro, Cruze and various Chevy trucks burn even more rubber (in a good way). We’re not sure how many of these 2017 Chevy performance parts will be available here in Manitoba, but we are sure that these or enhancements like them will be available some day. It’s fun to get a preview of them now.

Camaro Performance Enhancement

2016 SEMA Chevy Camaro with specialty performance partsWhile the base 2017 Chevy Camaro can burn up the track or the road, adding new 2017 Chevy performance parts can give this great muscle car even more oomph. SS models with the V6 and 2.0-liter engines can be enhanced with parts ranging from a brake upgrade (which features six-piston front calipers and sturdier rotors), a suspension upgrade (with enhanced handling or lowering) and even a new performance air intake.

Chevy Truck Performance Parts for 2017

Both appearance and practical accessories and enhancement will be available for Chevy trucks (including the Silverado and Colorado) in the new year. One of the newest options is a performance exhaust kit. Available with the 5.3-liter engine and 6.2-liter engine, this kit can deliver an extra 10 horsepower or 7 horsepower (respectively). Other available truck accessories will include custom wheels, side steps, bed liners, tonneau covers, and floor liners.

Cruze and Malibu Performance Parts

For those seeking a little more street-level zip for their Chevy sedan, there are also options, like a suspension lowering kit with stiffer springs, an enhance cornering system, and a new front stabilizer that can drop the 2017 Chevy Cruze Hatch 0.4 inches. The Cruze will also be available with a refined air intake and and exhaust system, while the Malibu will also be available with enhancements. The Cruze and Malibu Blue Line Concept cars at SEMA 2016 debuted some of these premium parts.

What Canadian Chevy Truck Is Best For You?

2016 Chevy Colorado vs Silverado vs Silverado HD

What is the difference between a mid-size, full-size, or heavy-duty truck? While the details of that answer may vary widely by brand, generally speaking a heavy duty model is for serious towing, hauling, or work site effort, while a mid-size model offers impressive fuel-efficiency. Full-sized models hold the middle. Keep reading to compare the 2016 Chevy Colorado vs Silverado vs Silverado HD and see which Canadian model in the three-truck Chevy lineup is ideal for you.

Blue 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 is dependable and versatile
The 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD has serious towing power

2016 Chevy Colorado

The 2016 Chevy Colorado is a mid-size truck that offers huge advantages in fuel efficiency (especially with its diesel engine option). Families that want a versatile, inexpensive truck that still offers impressive towing and hauling ability will be very pleased by what the Colorado brings to the table

  • Starting MSRP – $21,420
  • Highway Fuel Consumption – 7.7 L/100km (diesel)
  • Max. Towing – 3,493 kilograms (diesel), 3,175 kilograms (gas)

2016 Chevy Silverado 1500

The 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 full-size light duty truck is the tough and reliable workhorse of many families and workers. It doesn’t offer the same low fuel consumption as the Colorado, or the astronomical towing numbers of the Silverado HD, but it solidly holds the middle ground in capability.

  • Starting MSRP – $29,605
  • Highway Fuel Consumption – 10.4 L/100km
  • Max. Towing – 5,443 kilograms

2016 Silverado 2500HD

For serious work site capability, or families that regularly need to tow large items like boats and horse trailers, the 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD is an excellent fit. It is more expensive than the smaller models, but it compensates with sheer capability. For example: its 1,603 kilogram payload capacity.

  • Starting MSRP – $40,845
  • Highway Fuel Consumption – N/A
  • Max. Towing – 8,165 kilograms

When comparing the 2016 Chevy Colorado vs Silverado vs Silverado HD, it’s important that individuals and families know what they need in a truck. Someone who just needs a commuting vehicle with the ability to haul things occasionally does not need a Silverado 2500HD. Likewise if you regularly need to transport large amounts of cargo (like take a trailer to one of the fairs and festivals around Manitoba this summer), the Colorado may not meet your needs.

If you have any questions about this comparison, or would like to test drive one of these Chevy trucks near Winnipeg MB, feel free to contact us at Craig Dunn Motor City in Portage La Prairie.

New Engine and Transmission on the 2017 Chevy Colorado

The 2016 Chevy Colorado has taken Motor Trend Truck of the Year honours, but it’s not stopping there! For 2017, this vehicle in North America will be receiving an all-new V6 engine and a class-exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission. Keep reading to learn more about these 2017 Chevy Colorado powertrain upgrades.

Read More: Compare the Chevy Colorado vs Toyota Tacoma

2017 Chevy Colorado Powertrain Upgrades

When outfitted with the Duramax diesel engine, the Chevy Colorado can deliver some of the best fuel economy numbers in Canada. The new V6 and eight-speed automatic transmission are going to help give this truck better numbers on the gasoline end as well.

The new V6 engine will feature the same displacement (3.6-litres) as the previous engine on the 2016 Chevy Colorado, but will come equipped with variable valve timing, direct injection, and active fuel management. Fuel consumption numbers are not yet available, but this engine should be able to deliver 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque.

New Eight-Speed Automatic Transmission on the 2017 Colorado

The new class exclusive eight-speed Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmission will weight about the same as the outgoing 6L80 but will offer more confident towing, thanks to a wider overall gear ratio spread. This is the second elite transmission option Chevrolet has announced for its vehicles this year.

Pictured Below: The Hydra-Matic 8L45 which first appeared in the 2016 Cadillac CT6. A similar transmission will allow the 2017 Chevy Colorado to be even more capable.

the 2017 Chevy Colorado may receive something like this 8L45 eight-speed transmission from the 2016 Cadillac CT6

“The Colorado is currently the most fuel-efficient pickup truck in America, with an EPA-estimated 31 mpg highway when equipped with the diesel engine,” said Stan Ludlow, chief engineer for the 2017 Colorado, in a recent Chevrolet press release. “As such, for the new V6 and eight-speed combination we focused on improving everyday driving performance. Drivers will immediately notice that it pulls harder when accelerating from a stop or passing on the highway; it is more confident pulling a trailer up a steep grade and it is more refined cruising at a constant highway speed.”

While we don’t have confirmation that these new upgrades will be arriving in Canada, we are hopeful. The 2017 Chevy Colorado should make its North American debut in the fourth quarter of this year. Contact a Craig Dunn Motor City sales representative for more updates.

Chevy Colorado vs Toyota Tacoma Comparison

We love the Chevy Colorado. Not only is this great truck now available with a diesel powertrain that makes it the most fuel-efficient truck in Canada, but its power and comfort features are hard to match. Apparently, Car and Drive Magazine agrees with us. They took the Chevy Colorado and one of its chief rivals, the Toyota Tacoma, on a long-distance trip to test the mettle of each of these mid-size pickups. You can probably guess which vehicle came out ahead that in Chevy Colorado vs Toyota Tacoma comparison.

The idea was simple: take these two mid-size trucks from Mount Rainier near Tacoma in the state of Washington to Pike’s Peak in Colorado, a trip which ended up being more than 3,050 kilometres covered in just four days. On the way the folks from Car and Driver pushed each truck to its limits both on the highway and off the road.

You can read the whole account at www.CarandDriver.com, but the highlights, and what delighted us here at Craig Dunn, was how the Chevy Colorado wowed the judges and excelled. There are some highlights:

2016 Chevy Colorado vs 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Acceleration: The Chevy Colorado that was tested had just slightly more torque than the Tacoma, but it delivered it at lower rpm. That contributed to stronger passing and a faster 0-60 acceleration time

Power: The Chevy Colorado also offers stronger towing and payload options (check out our 2016 Chevy Colorado research page for details).

Cabin Comfort: Another place that the Chevy Colorado impressed the judges was in cabin comfort. If offered more head and leg room than the Tacoma, and offered better seating comfort and smoother driving. While the Tacoma that was tested came with certain top off-roading options, those really detracted from the ride comfort of the truck when on the highway, and didn’t help passenger comfort at all.

There’s a reason why the Chevy Colorado took the lead this year as the Non-Luxury Mid-size Pickup that customers keep coming back to: because when it comes to comfort, power, and bang for your buck, it’s hard to beat the Colorado. Schedule your test drive at Craig Dunn Motor City today.
