But what is Magnetic Ride Control? Available on the advanced trims of GM vehicles like the GMC Sierra 1500, Magnetic Ride Control adjusts the shocks of the vehicle real-time in response to changes in the terrain to offer a luxury smooth ride even when on rough roads or trailering.

This dampening system was first offered on the 2015 Sierra Denali as a standard feature for both the 5.3-litre or the 6.2-litre V8 engine options. Combined with other chassis and suspension alterations, this system made the Sierra an even better option for a full-size truck.

How Does Magnetic Ride Control Work?

Magnetic Ride Control pairs electronically controlled shock absorbers and sensors that read road conditions every fraction of a second, for a ride that can be tailored to driving conditions approximately every five milliseconds.

The electronic shock absorbers which replace traditional mechanical-valve shocks are filled with a magneto-rheological fluid which can behave like a regular liquid some of the time, but become stiffer when exposed to a magnetic field. The fluid contains tiny iron particles that will line up in that field. These shock absorbers can be carefully calibrated to offer precise levels of dampening.

This technology is also being used in things like washing machines, and may lead to advanced reactive body armor in the future. Check out the video below to see magneto-rheological fluid in action!

Quiet braking using the power of the engine

Traditional brakes on a passenger car require rotors and brake pads which are pressed together to produce the friction to slow or stop a vehicle, but on a large truck, especially one that is loaded down with a trailer or a large payload, that sort of braking may not work. That is where diesel exhaust braking comes in.

Diesel exhaust braking works by using the power of the engine itself to slow a heavy vehicle. When the exhaust braking is activated, exhaust is forced back into the engine, which causes the engine to run more slowly, or even reverse itself. This can slow, or even stop a vehicle without needing to use the mechanical brakes. This can reduces the wear on traditional brakes, especially when taking heavy loads up and down hill, and help those brakes last up to three times longer (which can safe you a lot when it’s time to get servicing).

On the new Duramax turbodiesel engine available on the 2016 GMC Canyon midsize truck (which has the best gas mileage of any truck when outfitted with diesel power), or various heavy duty trucks, the exhaust brake can even be used when a truck is in cruise control. It will help maintain the correct speed without needing constant corrections from the driver. The diesel exhaust braking on the Duramax diesel working with the Allison transmission always delivers the perfect amount of braking no matter the load or the incline.

What do car grilles do?

While the look of a grille is certainly vitally important for customer satisfaction, each grille also plays a very important role in cooling the vehicle’s engine, specifically the radiator. Without some way for air to flow into the engine compartment, a car would pose a major risk of overheating. While many modern cars could get enough air cooling through vents underneath the vehicle (and so could skip the front grille) it’s more effective and cool to have a grille in the front.

So while the grille is important, that leave a lot of leeway for how it actually looks. Just by looking at grille designs through the ages (and a handful of modern options) it’s easy to see that the grille can define the style of the car.

New grille technology can improve performance

While grilles come in all shapes and sizes, some technology using them can even improve performance. Many modern cars like the 2016 Chevy Volt and the 2016 GMC Canyon have aerodynamic technology that will close some of the grille grating when the vehicle is moving at top speeds. This reduces drag and improved aerodynamic flow. What is eAssist?

The big news in the last few months has been the release of eAssist technology on a limited run of the 2016 GMC Sierra and the 2016 Chevy Silverado. But what is eAssist? First appearing on Buick and Malibu sedans, GM eAssist technology is a combined gas and electric powertrain system which allows eAssist-equipped GM vehicles to offer exceptional fuel consumption without compromising on performance. Keep reading for a breakdown of some of the eAssist efficiency technology that we will see in the 2016 Sierra and future eAssist cars, trucks, and (hopefully someday) SUVs.

Light Electrification Powertrain

The beauty and genius of eAssist is how it combines both a traditional gas engine and an electric motor, and reaps the advantages of both. In the 2016 Sierra with eAssist, for example, a 5.3-litre V8 engine matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission will work with a compact induction motor to provide top efficiency without compromising on horsepower or torque. Indeed, the motor functions like a electric torque booster, and can add up to 44 pound-feet of torque and 13 horsepower to the already impressive engine performance, when that extra oomph is required, like when accelerating or passing.

Thanks to efficiency technology like direct injection, variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation (which allows the engine to run on fewer cylinder when they are not needed for towing or hauling), the eAssist V8 on the new Sierra is already extremely efficient, but the electric motor can even add to that. Electric power boost means that the electric engine can take some of the load at certain times, allowing the gas engine to continue operating more efficiently with fewer active cylinders.

Conserving Electric Power at Stops

The motor will be powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. In the case of the new Sierra with eAssist, this battery back will add just over 45 kilograms to the vehicle’s curb weight, but will offer significant reductions in fuel consumption, especially in city driving.

Thanks to this battery pack and motor, the 2016 Sierra will be equipped with Stop/Start capability, which will allow the engine to shut down at a traffic light, or in the rush hour crawl, and seamlessly restart once the driver takes his foot off the gas.

Regenerative braking is another major advantage offered by this powertrain. With this advantage, energy lost when braking is turned into electricity that can recharge the battery and help run the electronic of the vehicle, like the lights and the radio.

Connecting to Buick’s 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot

1. The first step to connecting to your Buick’s 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot is finding your SSID and password. You won’t be able to connect your device to the hotspot without these two things, and there are multiple ways to find your SSID and password. Probably the easiest way to find them is to hit the white voice command button on your rearview mirror. When the systems says “OnStar ready,” you’ll want to reply with “Wi-Fi settings.” Once you do this, your SSID and password will appear on your Buick’s display. Another way to find your SSID and password is to pull open your  RemoteLink® app and click the hotspot tab, and the information will be displayed. The final way to find your SSID and password is by pushing the blue OnStar button on your rearview mirror. You will be connected to an OnStar advisor who will walk you through the process.
2. Once you find your SSID and password, you’ll probably want to change both your SSID and password to something that is easier to remember. You can change your SSID and password in the settings tab of your RemoteLink® app or by pushing the blue OnStar button on your rearview mirror.
3. You are now ready to connect to Wi-Fi. Keep in mind that your Buick’s 4G LTE Wi-Fi can accommodate up to seven devices at any given time, and you won’t be able to exceed that number. To connect your device, go to your device’s settings menu and turn on Wi-Fi. Your device will automatically detect the Wi-Fi hotspot, and once it recognizes the hotspot, click on it. You will then need to enter in your password. Once that is done, you are all connected!

Buick 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot limitations

The system allows users to easily stream movies, play games or read book, but if you’re out of service range or data, you’ll probably run into issues. You can purchase more data from an OnStar agent by pushing the blue OnStar button on your rearview mirror.
