Does Chevy or Ford Have The Toughest Construction?

2016 Chevy Silverado vs 2016 Ford F-150 Truck Bed Comparison

2016 Chevy Silverado vs 2016 Ford F-150 Truck Bed Comparison

You’ve heard plenty of times about a certain company building trucks that are extremely “tough”. Well, after serious testing, Chevrolet decided to put those claims to the test. In this 2016 Chevy Silverado vs 2016 Ford F-150 truck bed comparison, the high-strength roll-formed steel of the Silverado is pitted against the aluminum bed of the Ford. Keep reading to see which one ends up more, well, pitted.

Tests in the Lab and the Real World

Chevrolet engineers do extensive survival testing on every Chevy model before they ever get released into the wild, and the 2016 Chevy Silverado is no different. In addition to extensive testing to ensure excellent aerodynamic design, the Silverado and the materials that go into it get beaten up in the lab.

Chevy steel vs Ford aluminum lab testing
minor denting on the truck bed of the 2016 Chevy Silverado after impact testing
Chevy steel vs Ford aluminum denting after the toolbox drop test

Extensive lab testing is also bolstered by real-world applications. In the 2016 Chevy Silverado vs 2016 Ford F-150 truck bed comparison video below, these two trucks endured intensive tests that mimicked extreme conditions in the real world.

For the first test, a load of landscaping blocks weighing approximately 374 kilograms was dumped into the bed of each truck. This was designed to represent the abuse that a truck bed has to take on the worksite. For the second test, a standard steel toolbox was pushed off the side of the pickup bed. In the video below, the toolbox, loaded with tools, weighs about 13.6 kilograms. Check out the video to see the results of these tests.

If you don’t have the time to watch (or just want to skip to the good part) the summary of the results is that the steel bed of the 2016 Chevy Silverado got dented up quite a bit, but the stamped aluminum of the 2016 Ford F-150 experienced dents but also significant punctures that could negatively impact the usability of the truck.

Once again, the Chevy Silverado, with its tried and true steel bed construction, has proven itself as one of the most reliable trucks on the road, and a solid choice for any truck buyer. Contact Craig Dunn Motor City today if you would like to schedule a test drive of the Chevy Silverado in Portage La Prairie near Winnipeg MB.

What Canadian Chevy Truck Is Best For You?

2016 Chevy Colorado vs Silverado vs Silverado HD

What is the difference between a mid-size, full-size, or heavy-duty truck? While the details of that answer may vary widely by brand, generally speaking a heavy duty model is for serious towing, hauling, or work site effort, while a mid-size model offers impressive fuel-efficiency. Full-sized models hold the middle. Keep reading to compare the 2016 Chevy Colorado vs Silverado vs Silverado HD and see which Canadian model in the three-truck Chevy lineup is ideal for you.

The 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD has serious towing power

2016 Chevy Colorado

The 2016 Chevy Colorado is a mid-size truck that offers huge advantages in fuel efficiency (especially with its diesel engine option). Families that want a versatile, inexpensive truck that still offers impressive towing and hauling ability will be very pleased by what the Colorado brings to the table

  • Starting MSRP – $21,420
  • Highway Fuel Consumption – 7.7 L/100km (diesel)
  • Max. Towing – 3,493 kilograms (diesel), 3,175 kilograms (gas)

2016 Chevy Silverado 1500

The 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 full-size light duty truck is the tough and reliable workhorse of many families and workers. It doesn’t offer the same low fuel consumption as the Colorado, or the astronomical towing numbers of the Silverado HD, but it solidly holds the middle ground in capability.

  • Starting MSRP – $29,605
  • Highway Fuel Consumption – 10.4 L/100km
  • Max. Towing – 5,443 kilograms

2016 Silverado 2500HD

For serious work site capability, or families that regularly need to tow large items like boats and horse trailers, the 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD is an excellent fit. It is more expensive than the smaller models, but it compensates with sheer capability. For example: its 1,603 kilogram payload capacity.

  • Starting MSRP – $40,845
  • Highway Fuel Consumption – N/A
  • Max. Towing – 8,165 kilograms

When comparing the 2016 Chevy Colorado vs Silverado vs Silverado HD, it’s important that individuals and families know what they need in a truck. Someone who just needs a commuting vehicle with the ability to haul things occasionally does not need a Silverado 2500HD. Likewise if you regularly need to transport large amounts of cargo (like take a trailer to one of the fairs and festivals around Manitoba this summer), the Colorado may not meet your needs.

If you have any questions about this comparison, or would like to test drive one of these Chevy trucks near Winnipeg MB, feel free to contact us at Craig Dunn Motor City in Portage La Prairie.

Summer driving tips Canada

Focus on the road

This may seem fairly obvious, but it’s easy to get distracted while on the road in the summertime. Whether you’re surrounded by beautiful Canadian landscape or you’ve got a delicious milkshake in your cupholder that’s demanding your attention, make sure you keep your eyes on the road at all times. This is especially important in construction zones, where lanes may be closed or workers may be close to the edge of the road.

Keep the interior of your car cool

Leaving children or pets in the car while you run inside a store is a huge no-no, as headstroke is common when kids or pets are left unattended in a parked car. Temperatures inside a parked car can reach deadly levels in just 10 minutes even when it’s only 80 degrees outside. In fact, even if the windows are rolled down or the air conditioning is turned on, it’s still unsafe to leave kids or pets in the vehicle unattended.

Follow your vehicle’s regular maintenance schedule

It’s easy for your vehicle to overheat or malfunction in the warm months, so make sure to stay on top of your vehicle’s regular maintenance schedule. This includes receiving oil changes on time as well as replacing filters or other equipment as necessary.

Tips for controlling road rage while driving

Many people know basic etiquette rules and practice good etiquette daily, but for some reason, as soon as we hit the road, we sometimes seemingly throw our good manners right out the window. Road rage is very common, and whether its triggered by slow or reckless drivers or something else, we’ve all been there. Luckily, there are a few great tips and tricks for controlling that rage while behind the wheel. Do we have your attention yet? Read on, and we’ll teach you some of our favorite ways to keep our blood from boiling while on the road!

Three tips for controlling road rage

Plan ahead

If you’re running late and you’re stuck behind a long line of slow drivers, you’re probably going to get pretty frustrated, and that frustration can quickly turn into full-fledged road rage if you’re not careful. Although there’s no way to prevent people from driving slowly, leaving a little earlier can help keep you calm. Even leaving just a few minutes earlier than normal can mean the difference between calmly arriving at your destination on time and arriving a few minutes late with your forehead vein popping out.

Listen to your favorite music

One of the easiest ways to control road rage is to turn on your favorite music and just get lost in the tunes. Unless you’re listening to highly aggressive music, listening to music we enjoy releases dopamine in the brain, which makes us feel happy. Take a few minutes to compile some of your favorite songs into a playlist in your music library or on Spotify, or if you have a long commute, we recommend checking out a podcast or audiobook that you can focus on instead.

Realize it’s not all about you

As humans, we are wired to view the world through a very specific lense. That is, we think about what’s going on around us in relation to ourselves. When driving, however, it’s important to remember it’s not all about you. If a driver cuts you off or won’t let you get around them, it doesn’t mean they have a vendetta against you. It’s important to remember that other drivers actions often have nothing to do with us, and realizing that we are viewing situations through our own personal filter helps give a realistic perspective of other’s actions on the road.

Tips and tricks for increasing your engine’s lifespan

Don’t drive on “E”

Although it’s easy to not notice your fuel levels slowly depleting, it’s important to avoid hitting empty. Sediment from gas or diesel settles at the bottom of your fuel tank as time goes on, and driving on empty causes the fuel pump to send grit through the fuel lines. Driving on E is also dangerous because fuel in the tank helps cool the fuel pump, so having less than a quarter tank of fuel can cause overheating.

Avoid slamming brakes and putting the pedal to the metal

It can be fun to show off your car’s quick acceleration, but it’s not a race and you don’t have to beat every other car on the road off the line at a stoplight. Quick acceleration not only affects your fuel economy, but it also puts unnecessary stress on your engine. Slamming the brakes is not only hard on your brake pads, but your engine and transmission may be affected as well.

Don’t ignore your vehicle’s needs

Your vehicle comes with a special set of instructions that are meant to keep your vehicle running in tip-top shape for years down the road. Ignoring these regular maintenance recommendations can have a pretty negative effect on your vehicle’s health, so make sure you stay up to date with oil changes, tire rotations, and the like.

Ways to Prevent Your Phone from Overheating

Now that summer is here there are a few more things you should be keeping an eye on. The sun causes a few extra risks, especially during this time of year. One major risk has to do with your electronic devices. Heat can be very dangerous for items that have batteries. Today we’re going to take a look at some ways to prevent your phone from overheating.

It is important to prevent your phone from overheating, because this can cause serious damage to your device. When your phone overheats, it can cause permanent damage to the lithium ion batteries that power smartphones. One common way phones tend to overheat, is when they are in hot vehicles. That’s why engineers have added a cold air vent in select 2016 Chevy models. This air vent will keep smartphones wirelessly charging the car from overheating. This feature will be available in the 2016 Chevrolet Impala, Malibu, Volt and Cruze.

This new exciting feature is called the Active Phone Cooling feature and it works when the car’s heating, ventilation and cooling system is on. Most smartphones do have built-in thermal protection features that can cause the phone charging or turn off until it has cooled down. This is extremely inconvenient if you are using your smartphone to stream music, receive phone calls or navigate while you’re on the road. With the Active Phone Cooling feature, you won’t have to worry about your phone shutting off from getting too hot.

If you are interested in learning more about the Active Phone Cooling feature or any other innovative feature that new Chevy vehicles have, call or visit Craig Dunn Motor City in Portage la Prairie MB. We will be able to answer any questions you have about our current lineup or upcoming models. We also invite you to check back here often for more Chevy news.

Pothole damage repairs in Portage la Prairie

If you hit a pothole, regardless of whether you hit it head-on or barely nicked it, we recommend bringing it in for an inspection. Aside from obvious damage such as a popped tire, potholes can cause a punctured undercarriage, damaged exhaust, dented rims, or a bulged tirewell. If you have any concerns about your vehicle’s well-being, make sure to bring your vehicle into Craig Dunn Motor City for an inspection!

How to avoid hitting potholes

How to avoid pothole damage

The best way to prevent potholes from damaging your vehicle is to avoid hitting the pothole altogether, but we realize that may not always be possible. Sometimes potholes may be hard to see, making avoiding them nearly impossible. We recommend maintaining a safe driving distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to help identify potholes before it’s too late. If you do identify a pothole, it’s important to try to maneuver out of the way, but make sure you check your surroundings before changing lanes or slamming on the brakes. If hitting the pothole is unavoidable, we recommend slowing down as much as possible prior to hitting it and rolling through the pothole rather than rapidly braking.

How can I drive safely in the snow?

Tire on a snowy road

Tips for safe winter driving

As the snow starts to pile up, it is important to remember some safety tips for driving on snowy or icy roads. That is why we have created a list of tips for safe winter driving. This list will offer some suggestions that will help you stay in control of your vehicle. Let’s get started.

READ MORE: Easy Ways to Prepare your Car for Winter

Car covered in snow

Drive Slowly

Perhaps the most important safety tip of this entire list is to slow down. If you are going fast down the road and hit a patch of ice, then it is easier to slip and lose control of your vehicle. This is especially true when turning, so take it slow so you can reach your destination safely.

Roads

Map out your route to wherever you are going and try to avoid back roads. Snow plows don’t always reach these less used roads so avoiding these roads is a great way to avoid hazardous driving conditions. If you can’t avoid using unplowed roads, then you should drive slowly and cautiously.

Maintenance

As the snow falls, you should do some basic maintenance on your vehicle to make sure it is running in top shape. If your brakes are squeaking or the brake pedal is stiff, you should see if your brake pads need to be replaced. This is important for keeping control of your vehicle, especially when other drivers brake unexpectedly.

What Safety Features Are Available on GM Vehicles?

When you are shopping for a new vehicle, safety is probably going to be a top priority, right after affordability, practicality and attractiveness. Chevy Buick GMC Safety Features

From the very structure of the vehicle to available advanced active crash prevention features, the safety advantages on Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles offer a high degree of protection. Many vehicles offer as many as ten airbags for surround protection in the case of a crash. Most GM vehicles also come with several months complementary OnStar support, which includes the ability to notify emergency services in the case of a crash. Here are a few more safety features available on GM vehicles.

blind spot warnings make passing safer on the highway
a rear cross traffic alert warning lets you know that someone is behind you as you try to leave a parking space

Rearview Camera

Standard on many models, the rearview camera can help with parking and backing up by giving you an unobstructed view behind your vehicle. It can be especially useful watching for children.

Blind Spot Warnings

This feature will notify drivers if there is another vehicle in their blind spot. This can prevent someone trying to pull into a lane when they can’t see, or don’t notice, a car beside them.

Rear Cross Traffic Alerts

This feature greatly simplifies backing up. Your vehicle will warn you if a car is coming up behind you as you are pulling out of a parking space, which means fewer accidents.

Lane departure warnings and lane keeping assistance on GM vehicles
Forward collision alert on a GMC vehicle alerts drivers of impact

Lane Keeping Assist

Many Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles are available with lane keeping alerts and lane keeping assistance. These warn you if you are drifting out of your lane on the highway, and, in some cases, will help gently steer you back into the correct lane to avoid collisions.

Forward Collision Alert

With forward collision alert, and the even more advanced automatic braking, drivers can be warned of possible collisions in time to minimize or avoid impacts. With automatic braking, a vehicle will even begin to stop on its own when it senses a possible forward impact.

The exact features available on a given model vary wildly, but most of these are available on at least one trim level of all the Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles available here at Craig Dunn Motor City. Other exciting feature options include a Safety Alert Seat and the new Back Seat Notification on the 2017 GMC Acadia.

Tips for traveling with pets in summer

Summer is a popular time for traveling, and many people prefer to bring their pet along on the trip instead of leaving them at home. If you’re heading out on the road for a cross-country road trip, weekend adventure, or anything in between and your furry friend is making the trip with you, we’ve got a few tips for you. Keep reading to learn more!

How to safely travel with your pet

Provide plenty of exercise before leaving If you’re heading out on the road for any lengthy trip, make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise prior to departure. If you have a dog, take it for a long walk or play fetch for an extended period of time before hitting the road. This will help your pet relax (and most likely sleep) while in the car.

Stop for potty breaks Car trips can cause your pets anxiety, which may make them have to go potty more often than they normally would. Plan to make regular stops for your pet to go to the bathroom because the last thing you want when you still have hours left in the car is a stinky accident.

Make pets comfortable  Pets are part of our families, so we should treat them as such. Make sure they are either buckled in with a harness or are in a crate when the car is moving. Additionally, you should bring some water and their favorite toy to keep them comfortable and relaxed.

Never leave them in the car Even if you park in the shade, you should never leave your pet in the car under any circumstances. Pets can’t control their body temperature as efficiently as humans, so leaving them in a hot car for any amount of time can be potentially fatal.

Is My Pickup Truck Overloaded?

While it might be tempting to think that your truck can handle anything you can load into the cabin and bed (anyone here a puzzle expert?) the damage you can do to your vehicle from overloading is serious and not always obvious. While you probably won’t kill your truck by hauling a few (hundred) extra kilos in the back, you can definitely put a strain on it that it wasn’t designed to handle.
Mechanic looking at wheel and axel

Common truck damage from overloading

The strain of overloading isn’t good for your vehicle, whether it suffers from regular wear and tear or just hits that bump in the road even once. Some common issues include:

  • broken or fatigued springs
  • damaged axel and pinion seals
  • worn bearings
  • serious damage to your shocks

While we at Craig Dunn Motor City are happy to help you with all your service needs, it’s always best to avoid needing to make a trip to the shop (even if you can make a service appointment online!).

To figure out how much you can safely fit in your truck, take the gross vehicle weight rating (that is, the maximum weight that your truck is certified to handle) and subtract the weight of the truck and yourself (and any passengers) while driving. So if you have a two-wheel drive 2015 Chevy Silverado Regular Cab that has gross vehicle weight rating of 2948 kg and a curb weight of 2051 kg, you and your cargo combined can weight up to 885 kg. Check out our inventory to see other options that may offer greater payload capacity!

The occasional overloaded truck may not seriously damage anything, but if you don’t have much of a choice (or are willing to take the risk) be sure to take the journey slow and be super aware of any unusual sounds or reactions from your truck. Remember that the load your pickup can handle in the bed and cabin is a lot less than what you can safely tow.

Safe hauling and towing and we hope to see you when you want to upgrade to the latest Chevy Silverado or other Chevy and GM truck!!

What are IntelliBeam Headlights?

IntelliBeam Headlights on Chevy vehicles

With so many 2016 model Chevrolet vehicles being announced, we’re seeing a lot of great new styles, new technological innovations and new features coming down the pipeline. While some new advantages like smartphone connectivity are pretty straightforward, others are maybe less so. If you’ve ever asked yourself what are IntelliBeam headlights on Chevy vehicles and how they work, keep reading for the skinny on the bright future of Chevy and GM lighting.

Forest road at nightIntelliBeam headlights automatically switch between high beams and low-beams in response to traffic conditions. This system uses a small sensor on the upper center of the windshield to detect the headlights or taillights of other vehicles in traffic and adjust your Chevy’s lighting accordingly. IntelliBeam headlights are part of the Enhanced Driver Alert package available on select 2016 Chevrolet vehicles.

IntelliBeam only activates under certain conditions. When high beams are unnecessary during the day, it is inactive. The system also will not activate unless the vehicle is going over 40 km/h and it works better if the sensor area of the windshield is cleared and clean.

Variations on this technology have been available on select GM vehicles since 1952, but make no mistake, high beam the technology has advanced quite a bit since then. Some factors (like snow, fog, a blocked sensor, windy roads or broken, missing or obscured lights on other vehicles) can confuse the system, but generally the IntelliBeam system on Chevy vehicles promises to take away the headache of constant high beam adjustment and offer a smoother and more efficient driving experience.

IntelliBeam headlights will be available on the 2016 Chevy Silverado, 2016 Chevy Malibu and 2016 Chevy Tahoe, among others. You can schedule a test drive online for these vehicles in advance of their arrival, and experience first hand these new safety innovations at Craig Dunn Motor City.

Solutions for the 5.3 GM engine burning oil

Solutions for the 5.3 GM engine burning oil

There can be few things as frustrating as driving along from oil change to oil change and gradually realizing that your truck is going through more oil than a deep-fryer during the lunch rush. If you have an older GMC Sierra or other GM truck with a 5.3-liter engine, know that you are not alone. While having performance affecting flaws in your vehicle can be frustrating, know that there are solutions for the 5.3 GM engine burning oil that can keep your pickup running smooth (and don’t require you to start shopping for that brand new Sierra).

First off, the General Motors standard for acceptable oil usage in the Sierra is 0.946 liter every 3200 km. If you notice that your truck is regularly running above that (or it just feels high to you) it’s can never hurt to make an appointment at your local shop for an oil consumption test.

Mechanic holding a wrench with determination One common problem seen in the 5.3-liter engine is a failure of the valve cover to seal, which can cause heavy oil burn. Depending on the wear-and-tear on your vehicles, you may be able to get away with having the rings cleaned and getting a replacement valve cover that will seal again. Trucks that have been around the block a few more times (and built up the kilometer count) may need replacement rings and pistons to take care of the problem.

Here at Craig Dunn Motor City we are dedicated to making all aspects of vehicle ownership run as smoothly as we can. We offer a wide variety of repair and maintenance services, as well as an impressive inventory of new vehicles for your driving enjoyment.

Is Your Window Frosting on the Inside? Learn How To Stop It Here

Winter is upon us, which means it’s the time of the year when we need to start scraping windshields and bundling up. But what does it mean when your windshield is getting frost on the inside? Not only is this harder to clear off because of the shape of the windows, but it can mean too much moisture in the vehicle. If you’ve ever asked “Why is my windshield frosting on the inside?” keep reading to get the details and some ways to prevent or solve the issue.

Why Is My Windshield Frosting On The Inside?

While frost on the outside of a windshield can be caused by rain or snow freezing on the car, frost forming on the inside of your vehicle is caused by too much humidity inside the cabin. When temperatures drop below freezing, this humidity can freeze on the inside of the windshield, and cause hassles for you de-icing your vehicle in the morning, and make you need to spend more time than usual with the defroster running.

Excessive humidity in your cabin can have many causes. One simple issue could be all the snow that you and your passengers have been tracking into the vehicle now that winter weather has arrived. When this excessive moisture melts, it can fill the air in your vehicle and then cause frost to form when it sits overnight.

If interior frost forms once in a while it’s probably just from people bringing in moisture. If your windshield always has frost, you may want to bring your vehicle into the shop to check for leaks that may be letting in moisture

Stop Frost From Forming

The best way to stop frost from forming inside your windshield is to get ride of the excess humidity. If you have your vehicle in a garage you may be able to leave a window slightly open to allow the moisture to escape. Using things that absorb moisture (like cat liter or rice) may also help. You can also give your windshield a thorough cleaning. This may remove the microscopic dirt particles that the water is freezing around.

Remove Internal Icing

It can be hard to remove ice from the inside of your windshield because the curve of the glass isn’t designed to work with scrapers (the way the outside is). You can remove ice on the inside of your windshield with good old fashioned defrosting, but that might take a while. One of the best methods we have heard of is to heat up a cloth or use a handwarmer to quickly but safely remove the ice. Don’t use a wet rag, because that will just be worse in the long run.

Let us know in the comments if you have other methods that work for you! And if you are looking for a new, winter-ready vehicle, you can check out our selection of new Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles, many of which are available with all-wheel drive.
