How Do You Make a Truck Aerodynamic?

How Do You Make a Truck Aerodynamic?

A ton of science goes into the development (and constant improvement) of any vehicle, and GMC trucks like the Sierra are no exception. While we’re going to go into some of the details in this blog (because this stuff is cool and practical at the same time) the simple answer to the question of “How do you make a truck aerodynamic” is “With a lot of work.”

A few years ago, the Sierra was put under the microscope (or rather, into a wind tunnel) at the General Motors Aerodynamics Lab. With huge turbines, this lab is able to create winds of up to 222 km/h. By watching how wind flows around the GMC Sierra 1500, scientists were able to look at the entire truck and design it to create the least air-resistant ride.

Wind resistance tailgate testModifications to the front fascia, the top of the Sierra’s tailgate, the centre high-mounted stop light, cab sealing, and even tweaks to the Sierra’s flow path from the grille to the radiator are the designed to improve aerodynamics.

What are the benefits of aerodynamics?

The benefits of good aerodynamics in vehicles included a quieter ride, less-wind resistance (so easier driving and handling), and improved fuel consumption. You can’t really change the fact that you are driving several hundred kilograms of steel from one place to another, but you can at least decrease how hard the air hits it.

Read More: Ways to Improve Vehicle Fuel Efficiency

What are the best accessories to improve aerodynamics?

Many accessories like bug deflectors, different size tires, non-standard bumpers, or cargo nets instead of solid tailgates can increase air resistance. In fact a raised tailgate is better for driving because the truck is designed to have the air flow around it instead of catch on it.

Some accessories that can improve aerodynamics include tonneau covers for the bed (soft are better than hard) or some running boards, because both modifications help air move smoothly over the vehicle’s sides and without drag.

front and rear seating of the 2017 Chevy CruzeThe 2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel sedan will have a Canadian starting price of $24,095 when it begins arriving in showroom in early 2017. That does not include a destination freight charge of $1,600, or taxes, fees, or any additional Chevy accessories. We believe that the new Cruze diesel will be a single trim option, but be sure to check on this blog in the future for updates. Some features that will be standard on this diesel model include:

What Engine Will Be In the 2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel?

The diesel engine on the 2017 Chevy Cruze diesel will be a 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine. It will come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but a nine-speed automatic transmission will also be available. We believe that this engine is the same model that will be available in diesel editions of the 2018 Chevy Equinox. We have no information yet on horsepower or torque outputs for these powertrains, but we assume that this engine will deliver on the fuel-efficiency advantages that usually come with diesel fuel. The 2017 Cruze Diesel is poised to become the only clean diesel engine option for Canadian compact car customers.

What are IntelliBeam Headlights?

IntelliBeam Headlights on Chevy vehicles

With so many 2016 model Chevrolet vehicles being announced, we’re seeing a lot of great new styles, new technological innovations and new features coming down the pipeline. While some new advantages like smartphone connectivity are pretty straightforward, others are maybe less so. If you’ve ever asked yourself what are IntelliBeam headlights on Chevy vehicles and how they work, keep reading for the skinny on the bright future of Chevy and GM lighting.

Forest road at nightIntelliBeam headlights automatically switch between high beams and low-beams in response to traffic conditions. This system uses a small sensor on the upper center of the windshield to detect the headlights or taillights of other vehicles in traffic and adjust your Chevy’s lighting accordingly. IntelliBeam headlights are part of the Enhanced Driver Alert package available on select 2016 Chevrolet vehicles.

IntelliBeam only activates under certain conditions. When high beams are unnecessary during the day, it is inactive. The system also will not activate unless the vehicle is going over 40 km/h and it works better if the sensor area of the windshield is cleared and clean.

Read More: What is Magnetic Ride Control?

Variations on this technology have been available on select GM vehicles since 1952, but make no mistake, high beam the technology has advanced quite a bit since then. Some factors (like snow, fog, a blocked sensor, windy roads or broken, missing or obscured lights on other vehicles) can confuse the system, but generally the IntelliBeam system on Chevy vehicles promises to take away the headache of constant high beam adjustment and offer a smoother and more efficient driving experience.

IntelliBeam headlights will be available on the 2016 Chevy Silverado, 2016 Chevy Malibu and 2016 Chevy Tahoe, among others. You can schedule a test drive online for these vehicles in advance of their arrival, and experience first hand these new safety innovations at Craig Dunn Motor City.

There are also several CNG (compressed natural gas) and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) options on the market. These fuels offer an alternative and highly-efficient option when it comes to powering a heavy-duty vehicle. Thanks to a recently announced partnership between GM and Power Solutions International Inc., more heavy-duty pickups and full-size vans equipped with the 6.0-litre V8 will be available with the ability to burn these fuels.

These vehicles will be available in select locations within the first three months of 2017. We don’t know yet if these vehicles will be available in Manitoba at our dealership, but contact a member of our sales team to learn more about alternative fuel options at Craig Dunn Motor City.
