2018 Chevy Equinox Powertrain Options

The 2018 Chevy Equinox will see several powertrain improvements compared to the 2017 Equinox model. These include a new base engine, an upgraded optional engine, and the first (and currently only) compact SUV in North America to be available with a diesel option. All of these powertrain options are turbocharged. Check below for more details on these models.

1.5-litre Gas Turbo

The new base engine on the 2018 Chevy Equinox will be a refined 1.5 turbo. Optimized for fuel-efficiency (thanks to features like direct injection) this engine should be able to deliver a fuel-consumption rating as low as 7.6 L/100km on the highway with front-wheel drive. This engine will offer a GM-estimated 170 horsepower.

2.0-litre Gas Turbo

This four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0-litre promises to deliver the capability of the previous year’s V6 engine, with increased fuel-efficiency. This engine will be rated for 252 horsepower and be able to trailer up to 1,585 pounds (which is a match for the 2017 Equinox with the V6). This engine will also be able to offer 8.4 L/100km on the highway.

1.6-litre Turbo-Diesel

The all-new 1.6-litre turbo-diesel on the 2018 Equinox combines the fuel-efficiency of diesel power with premium torque, power, and technology like stop-start. This engine has an estimated output of 136 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, and has a GM-estimated fuel-consumption rating of just 5.9 L/100km on the highway.

New Back Seat Notification on the 2017 Acadia

2017 GMC Acadia Back Seat Reminder

In pursuit of the ideal family vehicle, car-makers the world over continue to add better and better features to the vehicles that they produce. Whether that is advanced trailering camera technology, or new fuel-efficient eAssist powertrain option on the 2016 GMC Sierra, these editions are designed to make life move more smoothly for families and individuals. Now, with the 2017 GMC Acadia back seat reminder feature, families can be even more sure that they are not leaving anything important behind.

What Do You Forget in Your Vehicle?

In a large vehicle like the 2017 GMC Acadia, which can fit up to seven passengers in three rows of seating, it can be unfortunately easy to leave things behind. Sometimes these are minor, like a chocolate bar that gets melted in the afternoon heat, but sometimes it can be more serious. Children left behind in cars may just become bored, but sometimes they run the risk of serious heat stroke, frostbite, or death.

With the 2017 GMC Acadia Back Seat Reminder, parents now have another set of digital eyes ready to help them keep tract of the important things. This new feature will track what doors have been opened in the course of the Acadia’s journeying, and will remind drivers to check the back seat if it seems likely that they have something there.

What Does the 2017 GMC Acadia Back Seat Reminder Look Like?

If a GMC Acadia equipped with this features senses that the rear doors were opened and closed at the beginning of a journey (like to load children or packages), the next time the 2017 Acadia is turned off after a door activation, it will show a message in the driver information center and sound a chime five times.

The 2017 GMC Acadia cannot actually detect items in the back seat, but it can help drivers remember when they may have put something there. Whether this means that fewer children are forgotten, or valuables can be safety stowed to discourage theft, this back seat reminder on the 2017 GMC Acadia is a nice addition to the host of new features and advantages already available on this great vehicle.

New Enhancements Make Chevy Vehicles Roar

2017 Chevy Performance Parts

With the 2016 SEMA Show, Chevrolet has released a number of performance-enhancing parts that will make the Camaro, Cruze and various Chevy trucks burn even more rubber (in a good way). We’re not sure how many of these 2017 Chevy performance parts will be available here in Manitoba, but we are sure that these or enhancements like them will be available some day. It’s fun to get a preview of them now.

Camaro Performance Enhancement

2016 SEMA Chevy Camaro with specialty performance partsWhile the base 2017 Chevy Camaro can burn up the track or the road, adding new 2017 Chevy performance parts can give this great muscle car even more oomph. SS models with the V6 and 2.0-liter engines can be enhanced with parts ranging from a brake upgrade (which features six-piston front calipers and sturdier rotors), a suspension upgrade (with enhanced handling or lowering) and even a new performance air intake.

Chevy Truck Performance Parts for 2017

Both appearance and practical accessories and enhancement will be available for Chevy trucks (including the Silverado and Colorado) in the new year. One of the newest options is a performance exhaust kit. Available with the 5.3-liter engine and 6.2-liter engine, this kit can deliver an extra 10 horsepower or 7 horsepower (respectively). Other available truck accessories will include custom wheels, side steps, bed liners, tonneau covers, and floor liners.

Cruze and Malibu Performance Parts

For those seeking a little more street-level zip for their Chevy sedan, there are also options, like a suspension lowering kit with stiffer springs, an enhance cornering system, and a new front stabilizer that can drop the 2017 Chevy Cruze Hatch 0.4 inches. The Cruze will also be available with a refined air intake and and exhaust system, while the Malibu will also be available with enhancements. The Cruze and Malibu Blue Line Concept cars at SEMA 2016 debuted some of these premium parts.

Hydra-Matic 10-Speed Transmission Advantages

2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 new 10-speed transmissionWhile an eight-speed automatic Hydra-Matic transmission was previously available on the 2016 Chevy Camaro (mated to the award-winning 3.6-litre V6 engine), the 2017 Camaro ZL1 will be the first volume production car to offer the 10-speed option. The third and most exciting feature is called AtYourService. This feature will give you access to all kinds of travel information. GM has already partnered with a variety of businesses including Dunkin’ Donuts, Parkopedia, RetailMeNot and Entertainment Book to help provide information while you are on the go. Pretty soon you will be able to use OnStar to make hotel reservations, find Dunkin’ Donuts locations and more!

You can look forward to these features coming to Craig Dunn Motor City in 2015. It is an exciting time to be part of the automotive industry and we can’t wait to see what other innovations are coming this way. Does Chevy or Ford Have The Toughest Construction?

2016 Chevy Silverado vs 2016 Ford F-150 Truck Bed Comparison

2016 Chevy Silverado vs 2016 Ford F-150 Truck Bed Comparison

You’ve heard plenty of times about a certain company building trucks that are extremely “tough”. Well, after serious testing, Chevrolet decided to put those claims to the test. In this 2016 Chevy Silverado vs 2016 Ford F-150 truck bed comparison, the high-strength roll-formed steel of the Silverado is pitted against the aluminum bed of the Ford. Keep reading to see which one ends up more, well, pitted.

Tests in the Lab and the Real World

Chevrolet engineers do extensive survival testing on every Chevy model before they ever get released into the wild, and the 2016 Chevy Silverado is no different. In addition to extensive testing to ensure excellent aerodynamic design, the Silverado and the materials that go into it get beaten up in the lab.

Chevy steel vs Ford aluminum lab testing
minor denting on the truck bed of the 2016 Chevy Silverado after impact testing
Chevy steel vs Ford aluminum denting after the toolbox drop test

Extensive lab testing is also bolstered by real-world applications. In the 2016 Chevy Silverado vs 2016 Ford F-150 truck bed comparison video below, these two trucks endured intensive tests that mimicked extreme conditions in the real world.

For the first test, a load of landscaping blocks weighing approximately 374 kilograms was dumped into the bed of each truck. This was designed to represent the abuse that a truck bed has to take on the worksite. For the second test, a standard steel toolbox was pushed off the side of the pickup bed. In the video below, the toolbox, loaded with tools, weighs about 13.6 kilograms. Check out the video to see the results of these tests.

If you don’t have the time to watch (or just want to skip to the good part) the summary of the results is that the steel bed of the 2016 Chevy Silverado got dented up quite a bit, but the stamped aluminum of the 2016 Ford F-150 experienced dents but also significant punctures that could negatively impact the usability of the truck.

Once again, the Chevy Silverado, with its tried and true steel bed construction, has proven itself as one of the most reliable trucks on the road, and a solid choice for any truck buyer. Contact Craig Dunn Motor City today if you would like to schedule a test drive of the Chevy Silverado in Portage La Prairie near Winnipeg MB.

What is OnStar?

What is OnStar?

Many car brands now come with the option of some kind of safety/security system. They each have their own so it can be complicated to know exactly what each provides and how the system works. Ways to Prevent Your Phone from Overheating

Now that summer is here there are a few more things you should be keeping an eye on. The sun causes a few extra risks, especially during this time of year. One major risk has to do with your electronic devices. Heat can be very dangerous for items that have batteries. Today we’re going to take a look at some ways to prevent your phone from overheating.

It is important to prevent your phone from overheating, because this can cause serious damage to your device. When your phone overheats, it can cause permanent damage to the lithium ion batteries that power smartphones. One common way phones tend to overheat, is when they are in hot vehicles. That’s why engineers have added a cold air vent in select 2016 Chevy models. This air vent will keep smartphones wirelessly charging the car from overheating. This feature will be available in the 2016 Chevrolet Impala, Malibu, Volt and Cruze.

This new exciting feature is called the Active Phone Cooling feature and it works when the car’s heating, ventilation and cooling system is on. Most smartphones do have built-in thermal protection features that can cause the phone charging or turn off until it has cooled down. This is extremely inconvenient if you are using your smartphone to stream music, receive phone calls or navigate while you’re on the road. With the Active Phone Cooling feature, you won’t have to worry about your phone shutting off from getting too hot.

If you are interested in learning more about the Active Phone Cooling feature or any other innovative feature that new Chevy vehicles have, call or visit Craig Dunn Motor City in Portage la Prairie MB. We will be able to answer any questions you have about our current lineup or upcoming models. We also invite you to check back here often for more Chevy news.

OnStar and GM are breaking records for customer service

OnStar and GM are breaking records for customer service

Looking up at the night sky, you can see a billion stars. What you can’t see are the more than one billion customer requests that OnStar has fielded since their inception almost twenty years ago.

In 1996, the first OnStar system premiered on GM vehicles. Now, with over a million GMC, Buick, Cadillac and Chevy vehicles in Canada and North America outfitted with OnStar, it’s no wonder that OnStar and GM are breaking records for customer service.

The original OnStar service was a lot more basic than OnStar 4G LTE available on new models like the 2016 Chevy Equinox or 2015 GMC Sierra. The original service would allow drivers and passengers to place a call from the vehicle if the airbags deployed. OnStar used, and still uses, GPS and cellphone connective technology to allow customers to get directions on the road, reach out for help in emergencies or even digitally make a diagnostic on their vehicles.

Man in GM vehicle activates OnStar

Today the service is even better. Today you can link your mobile device to a vehicle-generated hotspot and enjoy the internet wherever you are, as well as many other great features available on many new GM vehicles. While OnStar cannot (yet!) drive your vehicle for you, it can help with pretty much anything else.

In over one billion requests, OnStar has connected people to emergency services after accidents, guided people to delicious restaurants, and remotely slowed stolen vehicles during high speed chases. OnStar personnel have even helped deliver babies!

In the years to come, OnStar is likely to continue offering great customer service, and help with a billion more little parts of daily life. And Craig Dunn Motor City is glad to continue offering the service in a multitude of new cars, trucks and SUVs for your safety and driving pleasure.

Chevy Buick GMC Safety Features

From the very structure of the vehicle to available advanced active crash prevention features, the safety advantages on Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles offer a high degree of protection. Many vehicles offer as many as ten airbags for surround protection in the case of a crash. Most GM vehicles also come with several months complementary OnStar support, which includes the ability to notify emergency services in the case of a crash. Here are a few more safety features available on GM vehicles.

blind spot warnings make passing safer on the highway
a rear cross traffic alert warning lets you know that someone is behind you as you try to leave a parking space

Rearview Camera

Standard on many models, the rearview camera can help with parking and backing up by giving you an unobstructed view behind your vehicle. It can be especially useful watching for children.

Blind Spot Warnings

This feature will notify drivers if there is another vehicle in their blind spot. This can prevent someone trying to pull into a lane when they can’t see, or don’t notice, a car beside them.

Rear Cross Traffic Alerts

This feature greatly simplifies backing up. Your vehicle will warn you if a car is coming up behind you as you are pulling out of a parking space, which means fewer accidents.

Lane Keeping Assist

Many Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles are available with lane keeping alerts and lane keeping assistance. These warn you if you are drifting out of your lane on the highway, and, in some cases, will help gently steer you back into the correct lane to avoid collisions.

Forward Collision Alert

With forward collision alert, and the even more advanced automatic braking, drivers can be warned of possible collisions in time to minimize or avoid impacts. With automatic braking, a vehicle will even begin to stop on its own when it senses a possible forward impact.

The exact features available on a given model vary wildly, but most of these are available on at least one trim level of all the Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles available here at Craig Dunn Motor City. Other exciting feature options include a Safety Alert Seat and the new Back Seat Notification on the 2017 GMC Acadia.

What is a Head-Up Display?

GM Head-Up Display

Each year, the automotive industry comes up with new technologies that help drivers. Technology can help with fuel efficiency, safety, entertainment or simply keep the driver informed. There are a variety of new and exciting technologies to explore and they differ from brand to brand. One of these developments is the head-up display (HUD). This feature is available on many GM vehicles and it helps drivers to keep their eyes on the road while still staying informed. Let’s take a look at the history of the GM head-up display.

General Motors first began developing the head-up display back in 1965. Each decade since, it has gotten more and more developed. These systems play an important role in maximizing driver’s attention. The system projects important information onto the windshield and in the driver’s line of sight. Instead of looking at gauge clusters and infotainment screens, drivers can just glance at the head-up display directly in front of them. Recently there have been many improvements in the system to help drivers even more.

For starters, the screen has been simplified. Drivers can now select from screens that focus on navigation, audio information, a tachometer or a speedometer. The HUD screens are now tailored for each individual driver. GM has also improved the overall look of the HUD. It now has easy-to-read graphics with fine lines and distinct fonts. Icons have been simplified and lines must be at least four pixels wide. The HUD also features easy-to-use controls that are located on the steering wheel. You can interact with both the HUD and information centre with the same set of controls.

If you are interested in learning more about the GM head-up display, schedule a test drive at Craig Dunn Motor City in Winnipeg MB. We have a variety of vehicles already equipped with the HUD system so you can see how it works in person. Learn more about all the features and vehicles offered at Craig Dunn Motor City.
