Once Upon a time: Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

Technically speaking, the Chevy Malibu didn’t become its own model until 1978. Instead, it started out in 1964 as an elite trim of the Chevy Chevelle. Available in sedan, coupe, convertible, or station wagon body styles, the Malibu featured patterned interior upholstery and top-of-the-line interior features. The original Malibu (like its modern incarnation) was praised for its spacious interior and efficient driving.

In addition to a responsive suspension system and strong body-on-frame construction, the 1964 Chevy Malibu offered multiple powertrain options, starting at a standard 3.2-litre six-cylinder. Its top engine was a 5.4-litre V8 that cranked out 300 horsepower and it could be outfitted with either a four-speed manual transmission or a Powerglide transmission.

The 1964 Chevy Malibu was a stylish, well-equipped vehicle that delivered fun. It reached even muscle-car performance with the elite and sporty Malibu SS trim.

The 2017 GMC Canyon will be arriving in new GMC inventory across North America sometime in the fourth quarter of 2017 (though no details yet on the Canadian release date for us here in Portage La Prairie).

We are assuming that the SL, base Canyon, SLE and SLT trim levels from the 2016 GMC Canyon will return for the new model year, but we also know of two very exciting models that will be premiering for 2017.

The more we read about the 2017 GMC Acadia (which is currently making its Canadian debut at the Toronto Auto Show), the more excited we get about this new revised midsize crossover. Promising to be head and shoulders ahead of the 2016 GMC Acadia that it is replacing, this model is lighter, and available with even more great safety and technology features. 2017 GMC Acadia Engine Options

The new GMC Acadia will be available with two new powertrains. A new 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine equipped with stop-start technology will be standard, and replacing the current standard 3.6-litre V6 engine. That will pay off at the pump, with this engine offering a GM-estimated fuel consumption rating of 8.4 L/100km on the highway and 10.7 L/100km for city driving with front wheel drive. No news on the horsepower we can expect from this new engine yet.

A new and improved 3.6-liter V6 engine will still be available on the 2017 GMC Acadia. This engine will offer a GM-estimated 310 horsepower (which is a good 29 horsepower up from the previous standard 3.6-liter engine) and offer an estimated maximum towing capacity of 1,814 kilograms. It should also deliver on fuel efficiency of 9.4 L/100km on the highway with front-wheel drive.

Both of these engines will come equipped with direct fuel injection and variable valve timing to deliver on the best fuel efficiency. Both will be matched to a six-speed automatic transmission and electronically controlled drive mode selector. A Tow Vision Trailering system, including a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines to assist in hitching up a trailer, will be available in some models.

In addition to an excellent powertrain selection, the 2017 GMC Acadia will remain a spacious top midsize crossover, usually offering three rows of seating for up to seven passengers. Many advanced digital safety features also are available, as well as an “electronically controlled continuous damping system”, which sounds like Magnetic Ride Control to our ears, but may turn out to be something even cooler.

We just found out the pricing in Canada for the new GMC Acadia, and anyone who has already fallen in love with this midsize crossover is in luck. The base price for the new model is $2,525 less than the 2016 GMC Acadia, and will be available with even better available features and standard equipment. This midsize SUV will be available with three rows of seating in most models, a choice of powerful engine options, and a host of conventience and safety features. The new IntelliLink system will come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for easy smartphone integration.

Trim and Pricing Breakdown for the 2017 Acadia

The 2017 GMC Acadia will be available in four trim levels, and either front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The base SLE trim with front-wheel drive is priced at $34,995, with all-wheel drive increasing that cost to $37,995. The advanced 2017 Acadia SLT trim seems to only come with all-wheel drive, and will be priced at $47,295.

The 2017 GMC Acadia will also come with two specialty trim levels that will offer even more elite options. The off-road-optimized All Terrain trim will be available for $49,390 and the luxurious Denali will be priced at $54,695.
