What Safety Features Are Available on GM Vehicles?

What Safety Features Are Available on GM Vehicles?

When you are shopping for a new vehicle, safety is probably going to be a top priority, right after affordability, practicality and attractiveness. Fortunately Chevy, Buick and GMC safety features are some of the best. Keep reading to learn what safety features are available on GM vehicles and how these great active and passive features are keeping you safer on the road.

Read More: 2016 Chevy Equinox Earns Top Safety Pick

Chevy Buick GMC Safety Features

From the very structure of the vehicle to available advanced active crash prevention features, the safety advantages on Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles offer a high degree of protection. Many vehicles offer as many as ten airbags for surround protection in the case of a crash. Most GM vehicles also come with several months complementary OnStar support, which includes the ability to notify emergency services in the case of a crash. Here are a few more safety features available on GM vehicles.

rearview camera on a Buick vehicle
blind spot warnings make passing safer on the highway
a rear cross traffic alert warning lets you know that someone is behind you as you try to leave a parking space

Rearview Camera

Standard on many models, the rearview camera can help with parking and backing up by giving you an unobstructed view behind your vehicle. It can be especially useful watching for children.

Blind Spot Warnings

This feature will notify drivers if there is another vehicle in their blind spot. This can prevent someone trying to pull into a lane when they can’t see, or don’t notice, a car beside them.

Rear Cross Traffic Alerts

This feature greatly simplifies backing up. Your vehicle will warn you if a car is coming up behind you as you are pulling out of a parking space, which means fewer accidents.

Lane departure warnings and lane keeping assistance on GM vehicles
Forward collision alert on a GMC vehicle alerts drivers of impact

Lane Keeping Assist

Many Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles are available with lane keeping alerts and lane keeping assistance. These warn you if you are drifting out of your lane on the highway, and, in some cases, will help gently steer you back into the correct lane to avoid collisions.

Forward Collision Alert

With forward collision alert, and the even more advanced automatic braking, drivers can be warned of possible collisions in time to minimize or avoid impacts. With automatic braking, a vehicle will even begin to stop on its own when it senses a possible forward impact.

The exact features available on a given model vary wildly, but most of these are available on at least one trim level of all the Chevy, Buick and GMC vehicles available here at Craig Dunn Motor City. Other exciting feature options include a Safety Alert Seat and the new Back Seat Notification on the 2017 GMC Acadia.

Contact a Craig Dunn Motor City team member today to learn more about what safety features are available on GM vehicles.

Chevy Colorado vs Toyota Tacoma Comparison

We love the Chevy Colorado. Not only is this great truck now available with a diesel powertrain that makes it the most fuel-efficient truck in Canada, but its power and comfort features are hard to match. Apparently, Car and Drive Magazine agrees with us. They took the Chevy Colorado and one of its chief rivals, the Toyota Tacoma, on a long-distance trip to test the mettle of each of these mid-size pickups. You can probably guess which vehicle came out ahead that in Chevy Colorado vs Toyota Tacoma comparison.

The idea was simple: take these two mid-size trucks from Mount Rainier near Tacoma in the state of Washington to Pike’s Peak in Colorado, a trip which ended up being more than 3,050 kilometres covered in just four days. On the way the folks from Car and Driver pushed each truck to its limits both on the highway and off the road.

Grey 2015 Chevy Colorado towing a boat on the road

You can read the whole account at www.CarandDriver.com, but the highlights, and what delighted us here at Craig Dunn, was how the Chevy Colorado wowed the judges and excelled. There are some highlights:

2016 Chevy Colorado vs 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Acceleration: The Chevy Colorado that was tested had just slightly more torque than the Tacoma, but it delivered it at lower rpm. That contributed to stronger passing and a faster 0-60 acceleration time

Power: The Chevy Colorado also offers stronger towing and payload options (check out our 2016 Chevy Colorado research page for details).

Read More: 2016 Chevy Colorado Named Motor Trend Truck of the Year

Cabin Comfort: Another place that the Chevy Colorado impressed the judges was in cabin comfort. If offered more head and leg room than the Tacoma, and offered better seating comfort and smoother driving. While the Tacoma that was tested came with certain top off-roading options, those really detracted from the ride comfort of the truck when on the highway, and didn’t help passenger comfort at all.

There’s a reason why the Chevy Colorado took the lead this year as the Non-Luxury Mid-size Pickup that customers keep coming back to: because when it comes to comfort, power, and bang for your buck, it’s hard to beat the Colorado. Schedule your test drive at Craig Dunn Motor City today.

Check Out Pricing on the 2017 Cruze Diesel

The 2017 Chevy Cruze has already begun arriving on the lot here at Craig Dunn Motor City, but two special models are going to be available for 2017: the 2017 Cruze Hatch and the 2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel. Both of these models offer attractive features, efficient driving, and generous (yet compact) interior space. Check out 2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel Canadian pricing, engine details, and standard features below.

Compare the Chevy Cruze vs Honda Civic

Chevy Cruze Beats out Honda Civic As Consumer Report Recommended Car

Each year, the Consumer Reports Auto Reliability Survey identifies which vehicle in any given category receives the highest rankings for vehicle dependability and driver satisfaction. 2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel Canadian Pricing

front and rear seating of the 2017 Chevy CruzeThe 2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel sedan will have a Canadian starting price of $24,095 when it begins arriving in showroom in early 2017. That does not include a destination freight charge of $1,600, or taxes, fees, or any additional Chevy accessories. We believe that the new Cruze diesel will be a single trim option, but be sure to check on this blog in the future for updates. Some features that will be standard on this diesel model include:

  • Heated seats
  • Teen Driver safety features
  • Chevy MyLink infotainment system with seven-inch touchscreen
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility
  • Wi-Fi hotspot capability (data sold separately)

What Engine Will Be In the 2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel?

The diesel engine on the 2017 Chevy Cruze diesel will be a 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine. It will come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but a nine-speed automatic transmission will also be available. We believe that this engine is the same model that will be available in diesel editions of the 2018 Chevy Equinox. We have no information yet on horsepower or torque outputs for these powertrains, but we assume that this engine will deliver on the fuel-efficiency advantages that usually come with diesel fuel. The 2017 Cruze Diesel is poised to become the only clean diesel engine option for Canadian compact car customers.

Chevy Rear Cross Traffic Alert safety system

Chevy’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert works by using rear-mounted radar sensors to monitor what’s going on directly behind your vehicle. The system activates when you put it into reverse, and it acts as an extra set of eyes for you. If you start backing up and another vehicle approaches, you will hear a beeping noise from the system, alerting you that rear traffic is approaching. The Rear Cross Traffic Alert safety system is especially useful in crowded parking lots, when it can be hard to see if any other vehicles are approaching.

Flashback Friday: Six Decades of the ‘Vette

Six decades of the Chevy Corvette

With the recent successful restoration of the one millionth Corvette (which was almost totaled when a sinkhole opened under its showroom at the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky) we thought we’d take a quick look at the history of this stylish and iconic muscled car. Welcome to Flashback Friday: Corvette Edition.

First introduced in 1953 at the GM Motorama as a concept car, the sleek lines and power under the hood of the Vette drew enough interest that GM introduced the first generation for public sale late in the 1953 model year. Since then, over one million Corvettes have been constructed with care and pride by Chevrolet.

Looking for a new GM vehicle? Check out our inventoryWhen the one millionth Corvette was damaged, restorers thought that they would be able to just replace many of the parts that had been crushed in the fall. Much to their surprise, many of the Vette’s parts had been signed by those who played a part in the construction. Restorers had to work even harder to preserve as many of the signatures as they could. Through hard work and diligence, Chevrolet restorers were able to preserve, transfer or replace every signature on the vehicle and preserve the history of everyone who took part the construction of this milestone Corvette.

Damaged Chevy Corvette

Restored one millionth Corvette
Repaired upholstery one millionth Corvette

Over the years the Corvette has won many awards and recognition, such as first on the “100 Coolest Cars” list of Automobile Magazine, number five for Sports Car International’s “Top Sports Cars of the 1960s”, and even “Most Coveted Vehicle” for the 2006 Canadian Car of the Year contest. We can believe it.

The Corvette was even recognized as “Best Engineered Car of the 20th century” from the Society of Automotive Engineers. It’s a beautiful example of the engineering prowess and care that goes into every GM vehicle, from heavy-duty GMC Sierra 2500 trucks to the family-oriented Chevy Malibu.

The 2017 Chevy Cruze is available both in sedan and hatchback body style, while the 2017 Honda Civic is available in sedan, coupe or hatchback form. The Cruze comes standard with a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated for 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. CNG and LPG on General Motors Vehicles

When it comes to making the automotive world a greener place, General Motors is in the front of the race with vehicles like the 2017 Chevy Bolt EV and various eAssist engine options on cars and trucks. However, General Motors in North America is also making it easier for commercial drivers to save money on fuel and be good the environment at the same time with new alternative fuel options for GM fleet vehicles.

New Alternative Fuel Options for GM Fleet Vehicles

CNG fueling port for a specialized Chevy ImpalaWhen it comes to fuel options on Chevy and GMC vehicles, drivers don’t have to stick just to traditional gasoline and diesel power. There are also several CNG (compressed natural gas) and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) options on the market. These fuels offer an alternative and highly-efficient option when it comes to powering a heavy-duty vehicle. Thanks to a recently announced partnership between GM and Power Solutions International Inc., more heavy-duty pickups and full-size vans equipped with the 6.0-litre V8 will be available with the ability to burn these fuels.

These vehicles will be available in select locations within the first three months of 2017. We don’t know yet if these vehicles will be available in Manitoba at our dealership, but contact a member of our sales team to learn more about alternative fuel options at Craig Dunn Motor City.

GM Cars Capable of Using Alternative Fuels

While most vehicles that use alternative fuels are heavy-duty trucks and vans, there are also cars and SUVs available with alternative fuel options in North America (check Canadian availability separately). The Chevy Cruze is available with a B20-capable diesel engine, while the Chevy Impala is available with E85 Ethanol burning capabilities. Those seeking an SUV can take advantage of the E85-capable Chevy Equinox, Chevy Suburban, Chevy Tahoe, or GMC Terrain.

Electric vehicles from GM include the Chevy Bolt, Chevy Volt, and Chevy Malibu Hybrid.

2016 Chevy Colorado vs 2015 Chevy Colorado

With 2016 model year General Motors vehicles beginning to appear on dealerships across Canada even before the 2015 models have been sold, it can be a challenge to wade through features and details to decide which model is best for you. While the clearance prices and financing options on 2015 models can be pretty alluring, it can be hard sometimes to make the choice between a deal and the latest in technology options. So if you’ve been wondering what’s new between the 2016 Chevy Colorado vs 2015 Chevy Colorado keep reading to see a few of the options new for this coming model year.

Chevy Colorado Duramax Diesel

We’ve posted before about the Duramax diesel option that will be available on the 2016 Chevy Colorado, but it’s worth repeating, because diesel engines offer a host of advantages in longevity and efficiency that we think appeal to anyone wanting a reliable work truck or an efficient commuting vehicle. The 2.8-liter Duramax turbo diesel engine coming to the 2016 Chevy Colorado should be pretty awesome.Silver 2016 Chevy Colorado

Available Specialty Editions

The 2016 Chevy Colorado will also be available in an all-black Midnight Edition and a Z71 Trail Boss Edition optimized for off-roading.

Integrated Trailer Brake Controller

Sometimes your trailer wheels will lock up if the weight of the trailer isn’t matched to the braking force applied. With the brake control options newly available on the 2016 Chevy Colorado the braking force applied to your trailer can be optimized to match the weight it is carrying, hopefully giving you even better, and safer, braking abilities.

Enhanced Infotainment Options

Another new feature coming to the 2016 Chevy Colorado is an improved driver information centre in the gauge cluster of the LT and Z71 trims. Featuring an enhanced multicoloured display, this feature should offer even better technology integration options.

2016 Chevy Cruze Fuel Consumption

We love how the 2016 Chevy Cruze sedan offers a stylish exterior and top features at a reasonable price, even compared to its well-equipped predecessor. Now we know that the new Chevy Cruze has not only held its spot as one of the most fuel efficient GM vehicles on the road, but has even reached new heights of driving economy. Keep reading for the great news about 2016 Chevy Cruze fuel consumption.

2016 Chevy Cruze Fuel Consumption

Outfitted with the 1.4-litre turbocharged Ecotec engine, the 2016 Chevy Cruze will be able to deliver fuel consumption ratings of just 5.6 L/100km on the highway for the LS and LT models and 5.9 L/100km for the top-of-the-line Premier. In city driving, the 2016 Cruze will offer a fuel consumption rating of 7.8 L/100km.

Advanced Cruze Powertrain Features

the 1.4-litre Ecotec engine in the 2016 Chevy Cruze, artist's renditionThese fantastic numbers are boosted by the Cruze’s decreased weight for this model year, and efficiency technology like engine stop-start. This engine is matched to either a six-speed manual or six-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. This powertrain is also rated for 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque.

All together, a 2016 Cruze LS with the new engine, compared to a similar model in the previous year, offers a fuel consumption improvement of 26 percent in city driving and 18 percent on the highway.

“The all-new 2016 Chevrolet Cruze is a more efficient and sophisticated evolution of the brand’s best-selling global car,” said Laura Pacey, brand director, Chevrolet in Canada, in a recent press release. “The next-generation Cruze elevates the segment with innovative safety and technology features that are accessible to compact car customers.”

This new engine and its fantastic mileage numbers are far from the end in fuel efficiency technology and styling advancements for the Chevy Cruze. A diesel model (which will offer even more impressive fuel efficiency) should be available in 2017 and a hatchback Cruze model will be available this fall. Watch the Craig Dunn Motor City blog for more information as it arrives.
